Speak Up began on 6 July 2020 with the start of third wave of MeToo movement in Egypt to provide a platform for women who had experienced sexual assault and rape to make their experiences public.[2][3] The page had prompted an outpouring of testimonies from other Egyptian women fed up with being humiliated and violated.

Egypt has been experiencing a strong popular mobilization against cases of Sexual harassment and violence since 2020, when a university student was arrested after around 100 girls and women accused him of harassment, rape and blackmail.[4] A 2013 UN report cites a survey in which 83% of Egyptian women reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment – among foreign women, the percentage was 99%.[5].[6][7]

The initiative[8] played a prominent role in uncovering[9] the case of a serial rapist,[10] who was sentenced to lifetime prison[11] for raping and kidnapping minors[12] in November 2021.[13]

Purpose[edit]

The main purpose of "Speak Up" in 2020 was to support victims of violence by offering free legal and psychological support, and empower them through creating a safe, non-judgmental space for victims to anonymously express their traumatic experiences and share their stories.[14][15]

Later, it has expanded to further objectives, such as raising awareness about a myriad of gender-related issues.[16][17][18][19]

And started to cover[20] harassment/rape cases[21] and expose[22] harassers/rapists.[23][24]

Speak Up also stared national[25][26][27] and international campaigns.[28][29][30][31][32]

Impact in Egypt[edit]

Government and laws[edit]

"Speak Up" advocated together with "Tadwein Center for Gender Studies"[33] for amendments in the Egyptian law that criminalized Female genital mutilation (FGM). The suggested amendments[34] were accepted and adopted by the Egyptian House of Representatives in March 2021.[35]

Celebrities and local influencers[edit]

Many celebrities[36] and local influencers who follow Speak Up on social media platforms[37] have begun using their accounts[38] to show their support[39] for survivors of sexual assault and joined with Speak Up in different campaigns.[40][41]

Website[edit]

Speak Up launched their website in November 2021 to support victims, raise awareness and provide a safe space to receive and post testimonials of victims anonymously in three languages: Arabic, English and Português.[42]
