Spiekeroog I
Spiekeroog I is a German passenger ferry operated by Nordseebad Spiekeroog GmbH on the route between Neuharlingersiel on the mainland coast of Lower Saxony and the East Frisian island of Spiekeroog. Built in 1981 by Julius Diedrich Schiffswerft in Oldersum, the vessel is one of the principal ferries serving the island.[1][2]
History
Spiekeroog I was laid down on 30 October 1980 at the Julius Diedrich shipyard in Oldersum, was launched in April 1981, and entered service on 1 May 1981.[2] It was built specifically for Nordseebad Spiekeroog GmbH, the municipal company responsible for much of the island's transport and tourism infrastructure.[1][3]
The ferry serves the tidal Wadden Sea crossing to Spiekeroog and is designed for Wattfahrt (mudflat and tidal-water service).[1] Its home port is Spiekeroog, while Neuharlingersiel functions as its regular mainland terminal.[1]
In early 2024, during the temporary loss of the freight vessel Spiekeroog IV, Spiekeroog I also assisted in maintaining freight links to the island so that supplies could continue to reach Spiekeroog.[4]
Design and characteristics
According to the operator, Spiekeroog I has a gross tonnage of 553, a length of 46.75 metres, a beam of 10.00 metres, and a draft of 1.31 metres.[1] The vessel is powered by two main diesel engines, each rated at 368 kW, and is fitted with a bow thruster to improve manoeuvrability in the shallow and tidal harbour approaches used on the route.[1]
The ferry carries up to 744 passengers in the summer timetable and 544 in winter.[1] Public ship registries also identify the vessel under IMO number 8016897.[5]
Service
Spiekeroog I is part of the scheduled ferry system linking Spiekeroog with the mainland. The service is essential both for tourism and for the transport needs of residents on the car-free island.[6] The vessel normally operates alongside other ships in the Spiekeroog fleet, including Spiekeroog II and WattnExpress.[1][7]
