Stellina[lower-alpha 1] is an Italian animated television series created by Lucia Maria Zei, with co-production was amongst Rai Fiction, The Animation Band, Pictor Media Animation, and France 3.[1][2] It ran for a single season consisting of 26 episodes from 2008 to 2009.[3] It has been broadcast on Rai 2 since 21 September 2010, and on France 5 in Zouzous from 14 December 2012 to 17 January 2013.[4]

The Animation Band's YouTube channel has the intro and a couple of episodes: One in English (Lost in the Mountains);[5] the other in Italian (Bad Encounters).[6] The first episode in English is also found in June 2023 on Cyber Group Studios.[7] Other than those and a trailer promoting it, there's currently not much else material available and most of the series remains missing, though its French and Turkish versions can be found in Dailymotion and Youtube, respectively.

The series involves an orphaned 11-year old Stellina who escapes police pursuit to avoid being sent to an orphanage, while also confronted with the prejudice and racism of certain people.

Plot[edit]

In the 1960s, Stellina is an 11-year-old girl of Romani origin who does things her own way and was born into the circus lifestyle. She is an aspiring acrobat like her mother, who died during the performance. Despite never having received a proper education nor lived in a stable home, she is accustomed to being a vagabond and getting the love that engulfs her from her odd, circus family. Eventually, social services learn about her situation and when they attempt to have her sent to an orphanage, she escapes the circus, leaving that life behind, and goes on the run to evade capture.

Characters[edit]

  • Stellina - The main protagonist of the series, who was raised by the Circus Panagulis. She is rebellious, tenacious, courageous, and generous. She also owns a ferret as a pet.
  • Nikos - The head of the Circus Panagulis, who raised Stellina as his own daughter.
  • Tataglio - A very cheerful clown, who is ready to do anything to protect Stellina.
  • Maruchka - A clairvoyant who often reads the cards to see if Stellina is in danger.
  • Macaroni - A mute, who doesn't really have any trouble making himself understood. He has a great strength.
  • Albertina - Stellina's friend who is imposing and strong girl.
  • Teresa - A fragile girl with a stutter that has garnered her a lot of abuse. Stellina and Albertina stand beside her. Furthermore, she was adopted by a wealthy family but was rejected and returned to the orphanage, and during the incident with Mrs. Rossini, who disrespectfully feeds her unhealthy food, she throws the plate on this one, and she is sequestered by the latter to be sent back to the house of correction. Teresa was saved when the chief of police learns of Mrs. Rossini's disregard for Teresa's health.
  • Sonia - A great plague, who is still sensitive and can be very friendly and she is adopted by a family.
  • Laura - Sonia's friend most of the time.
  • Emir - Stellina's friend, who is one of Tony and Lucas' exploited children. He reunites with his grandfather after Tony and Lucas were arrested.
  • Bruno - A street boy who initially disliked Stellina, but eventually accepts her as his sister after saving her from Tony and Lucas.
  • Anna Decica - A young teacher who is kind to Stellina and stands up to Ms. Ascoli and Ms. Rossini.
  • The Mayor - A racist mayor who has contacted Mrs. Ascoli to have Stellina placed in the orphanage thanks to his son, who is responsible of her predicament in the first episode.
  • Mrs. Ascoli - A formidable social worker and the main antagonist of the series. She holds her grudge against gypsies (except those who are corrupted). After the judge discovers her mistreatment of Stellina, she is fired from her job in the final episode.
  • Tony and Lucas - Two bandits who exploit children by forcing them to steal from tourists in order to earn money. Stellina's acrobatic abilities are especially valued by them. They intended to abandon and send Emir and Stellina to the orphanage, but their plan backfired. At the second confrontation, they forced Stellina to perform a crime and then attempted to murder her, but Bruno intervened and the two bandits were arrested.
  • Mrs. Rossini - A terrifying iron fist and under direction. The secondary antagonist of the series, she is a racial discriminatory and xenophobic towards Stellina. She then got fired from her job for not taking care of Teresa's health by feeding her unhealthy food.
  • Giorgio - A farm boy, who helps Stellina escape from the police.
  • Roberto - A street boy, who is the friend of Tony and Lucas. He comes by on a regular basis to deliver them abandoned children. Unlike Tony and Lucas, he was not born from a toxic family. He didn't appear again after handing over Stellina to the bandits.
  • Alfredo - The director of the orphanage, who works in his room and runs the business. He plays the piano all hours of the day and night. After forgiving Stellina, he was suspended and eventually reinstated.
