Steve Wiideman (born July 3, 1976) is an American consultant, author, and educator known for his work in search engine optimization (SEO) and digital marketing. He is the co-author of the textbook SEO: Strategy & Skills[1] and has served as an adjunct professor at California State University, Fullerton and the University of California, San Diego.

Early life and education

Born Steven John Wiideman in Newport Beach, California to Marilyn Ann Threlfall and Randall Norman Wiideman. He was raised in Anaheim and Stanton and was a student at Western High School in Anaheim with classmate Tiger Woods. He served in the United States Army Infantry from 1994 to 1997, where he earned the Army Achievement Medal

Academic roles

Wiideman has served as an adjunct professor at both California State University, Fullerton and the University of California, San Diego, where he teaches courses in search engine marketing and optimization.[2][3]

Career

Wiideman began his career in IT and digital marketing roles at companies including IBM Global Services and Disney Parks and Resorts Online. In 2005[4], he started a freelance SEO consultancy, later incorporating as Wiideman Consulting Group in 2015.

In 2018, he was recognized as the Industry MVP at Conductor’s Searchies Awards, according to an interview published in VoyageLA Magazine.[5]

Wiideman has provided SEO consulting for companies in sectors such as retail, hospitality, and technology, including brands like Skechers, IHOP, and Public Storage.

A 2023 article in Entrepreneur Asia Pacific noted his involvement in strategy and oversight for digital marketing campaigns for clients including Disney, Linksys, Applebee’s, Jollibee, and Honda.[6]

Publications

In 2021, Wiideman co-authored SEO: Strategy & Skills with Professor Scott Cowley of Western Michigan University. The book is used in digital marketing programs across multiple U.S. universities. That same year, he published his first industry article, "Scaling Search Engine Visibility for Franchises: A Guide for Multi-Location Brands."[7]

He has contributed to trade publications and appeared in interviews discussing SEO and digital strategy, including in Entrepreneur[6][8] and CNBC.[9]

Public activities

Wiideman has appeared as a speaker at several industry conferences and contributed to industry podcasts and webinars.[10][11] In 2013, he was quoted in Vice as a search engine optimization consultant, discussing keyword-based content strategies in the context of music streaming platforms.[12]
