StorMagic is a British multinational computer software company headquartered in Bristol, specializing in software-defined storage and edge computing. StorMagic designs, develops and sells virtualization software that allows users to create virtual SANs, which permit highly available compute and storage to be converged into commodity x86 servers.[1][2]

Company history[edit]

StorMagic was founded in 2006 by entrepreneurs Hans O’Sullivan and Chris Farey, both of whom had spent time in senior roles at IP storage company Eurologic and its spin-off Elipsan, prior to starting StorMagic.

The company’s first product was a software-based iSCSI SAN named SM Series, launched in 2007,[3][4] which could be supplied to customers pre-installed on white box hardware. The development of SM Series saw the company engage in a relationship with VMware[5] which continues to the present day. Early adopters of the product included a number of higher education institutions such as Oxford University,[6] Liverpool University[7] and the University of Illinois.[8]

StorMagic SvSAN[edit]

StorMagic SvSAN was launched in 2009[9][10][11], using knowledge and feedback gained in the development of SM Series. At launch, SvSAN was one of a collection of solutions to pioneer the concept of the virtual SAN, a type of solution favoured by SMEs and edge computing environments such as remote and branch locations[12] to provide highly available shared storage.[13][14]

StorMagic has entered into multiple partnerships and agreements. Alongside a relationship with Cisco[15], centered on compatibility with the UCS range of servers, StorMagic also entered into a partnership with Lenovo in 2015.[16][17] Furthermore, in early 2018 a new range of Dell EMC appliances running SvSAN were unveiled.[18][19] A partnership with Citrix was announced, including Citrix Ready certification, in May 2018.[20][21]

Major developments of SvSAN have included the introduction of read and write caching features[22][23] as well as data at rest encryption[24] involving partnerships with several KMS vendors including Fornetix, Thales Group, HyTrust and Gemalto.
