The Surface Pro 12" (First generation) is a 2-in-1 detachable tablet computer developed by Microsoft to be an entirely new product line that is released alongside the Surface Laptop 13" as a more compact option.
Background and reveal
Rumored to be released in 2025 according to leaks back in 2024[1], The device was announced on May 6th, 2025, with the system being officially released on the 20th later that month[2]. The release marks a redesign of the Surface Pro 11 with the emphasis on portabilty and performace, this release is focused on offering the same look and feel of the Surface Pro, but at a slightly smaller 12" screen size. Designed to compete better with Apple's 11-inch iPad Pro (M4). Due to the lack of releases for the Surface Go line, reviewers suspect that this smaller Surface Pro is what Microsoft intends to replace that line.
Released at $799 for the base model, it comes with similar specifications except for a few notable differences, including a downgrade in the number of cores in the Snapdragon X plus, from 10 cores to 8 cores,16GBs of RAM only option, a 1080p front facing camera, USB 3.2 ports instead of USB4, the loss of a dedicated place for the surface pen to rest on the keyboard, no surface connect charge port, and no charger in the box.

Software
The tablet releases with Windows 11 for ARM. The line is advertised as being a Microsoft Copilot Plus PC. Meaning that this computer comes with Microsoft's AI Assistant out of the box, along with other AI features that advertise agentic capabilities.
Release and reception
The release of the new device looked to be positive, though with some reservationa given the historic issues with Windows on ARM. Some reviewers welcomed the new change. The smaller size, and integration with microsoft's products make it a compelling choice, espectially compared to the iPad and Apple's Ecosystem. Not to mention the level of performance and power efficiency that comes with the However, others were not impressed with the use of the device. As Windows on ARM still presented issues with app incompatibilty. Even worse, the lack of a charger in the box meant that users felt that they were being "strongarmed" into paying $70 for the new 45w USB-C charger, along with the expensive keyboard and pen. Making it a harder sell overall.
