Survival of the Idiots is the first segment of the ninth episode of the second season, and the 29th overall episode of Spongebob Squarepants. In this episode, Spongebob and Patrick visit Sandy's treedome only to discover that Sandy is hibernating for the winter. The episode follows the two as they try to survive the harsh winter conditions inside the treedome, as well as avoiding waking up Sandy from her hibernation. The episode is considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the greatest Spongebob Squarepants episodes of all time.

Plot[edit]

SpongeBob and Patrick excitedly race to Sandy's treedome to hang out with her. However, the entire dome has a metal cover over it and a "Keep Out" sign on the front door. Spongebob and Patrick find a TV and it plays a video of Sandy explaining that she is hibernating for the winter, and asks for no one to disturb her. However, Patrick opens the door anyway (out of disbelief) to reveal that the dome's environment is completely covered with snow.

SpongeBob and Patrick take delight in the snow. When they hear a strange noise from Sandy's treehouse, they go inside to investigate. They then discover that Sandy is many times her original size due to eating loads of acorns, and is sleeping, dreaming of catching the outlaws Dirty Dan and Pinhead Larry. Soon enough, Sandy suddenly wakes up, assaulting SpongeBob and Patrick in her sleepy stupor, before falling back to sleep. Patrick then makes a pair of earmuffs, which are placed over Sandy's ears to prevent her from waking up.

SpongeBob and Patrick continue playing in the snow. They pretend to be the outlaws from Sandy's dream, but start fighting over which one of them will play the part of Dirty Dan. Their roughhousing knocks Sandy's earmuffs off, causing her to attack them in her half-asleep fury. Trapped in tombstones, and with the winter storm growing more intense, SpongeBob and Patrick attempt to leave, but find that the door is frozen shut.

Unable to escape or survive, they go into Sandy's room and rip off all her fur. SpongeBob proclaims that now they're ready for the "Longest, coldest winter ever!" However, winter immediately comes to an end, and Sandy wakes up back to normal. Sandy is shocked to see SpongeBob and Patrick wearing her fur and to find herself completely bald, much to her serious anger. SpongeBob and Patrick then realize that ripping her fur off was a terrible idea. Sandy drinks lemonade with Spongebob and Patrick, with their bodies tightly wrapped around her to provide her new spring coat to keep her warm until her fur grows back, much to SpongeBob and Patrick's dismay.
