Susanna Gibson is a Democratic political candidate running for the 57th House District open seat in the 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election against Republican candidate David Owen. The contest has drawn large amounts of interest and funding for an off-year race due to its impact on deciding which party will have control over the Virginia General Assembly and thus Governor Youngkin's ability to pass his agenda.[1] Gibson received widespread national attention after a sex scandal revealed that she had streamed pornographic acts online. According to Politco, it was the first time that a politician's sex video has spread on the internet.[2]

Political positions[edit]

Gibson has campaigned on the issue of reproductive rights and decided to run for political office following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.[3][4][5] Other campaign priorities include banning assault weapons, lowering the cost of living and protecting the environment.[6]

Controversies[edit]

In September 2023, during Gibson's campaign, an anonymous Republican source alerted The Washington Post of videos showing Gibson performing sex acts recorded live for tips with her husband on the adult streaming site Chaturbate. Gibson characterized the situation as "an illegal invasion of my privacy designed to humiliate me and my family" and as an attempt to silence women.[6] Lawyers representing Gibson have asserted that the dissemination of the videos violate Virginia's revenge porn laws.[6][1]

The anonymous source denies any connection to the Owen campaign. In a written statement, Owen remarked, "I'm sure this is a difficult time for Susanna and her family, and I'm remaining focused on my campaign."[6]

Several Democratic politicians and advocacy groups have defended Gibson and reaffirmed their support of her, while other political commentators have stated that Gibson will likely face backlash.[5]
