The M3t was a series of three steam turbine locomotives built for the "Trafikaktiebolaget Grängesberg-Oxelösunds Järnvägar" (TGOJ) railway company. The steam turbine on the locomotive was designed by Fredrik Ljungström and the locomotive was built by NOHAB in Trollhättan. The primary task of TGOJ was to transport iron ore from the mines in Bergslagen to the steel mill in Oxelösund and it was for this task that the three M3t turbine locomotives where built.
M3t no:71 was built in 1930 and then had a period to work out all the problems with the locomotive, which was completed in January 1932. The locomotive was delivered in June 1932 to TGOJ after a delay of 87 weeks.[1] M3t no:72 and 73 where delivered in 1936. All locomotives still exist and no:71 is in full working order.
The locomotives worked the TGOJ lines pulling 1700 ton iron ore trains until the 1950s when the Ma and Bt electric locomotives replaced them. A M3t locomotive pulled the last iron ore train from the Grängesberg mine in 1990 as the last iron ore line closed on the TGOJ network.
