TRU LUV is an independent studio making AI companions for mobile phones. It was founded in 2015 by Brie Code. It is headquartered in Toronto, Canada.
The company released its first app, BreatheLUV,[1] in January 2018 and its second, #SelfCare,[2] in July 2018. #SelfCare was named one of Apple's Best of 2018 apps [3] and was downloaded over 500,000 times in seven weeks. [4]
History
TRU LUV was founded in 2015 by Brie Code, a game designer and former lead programmer at Ubisoft.[5]
Code left her job at Ubisoft and her Montreal home to travel the world speaking at games conferences, saying "I made it my life’s goal to create games that will empower my friends the way games have empowered me."[6] In 2016, she began work on multiple mobile apps with friends and acquaintances who did not have a background in video games, including writer Eve Thomas. Code and Thomas came up with the idea for #SelfCare, a hybrid wellness app and mobile game whose main character stays hidden in bed while users interact with it and objects around the room, including a cat, bubbles and tarot cards. [7]
In January 2018, TRU LUV launched BreatheLUV [8] a simple breathing exercise app that would eventually appear as a mini-game within the app #SelfCare.
In July 2018, #SelfCare was launched in the App Store and Google Play for Android.
In the summer of 2019, TRU LUV set up offices in Toronto, Canada, though most of the team members work remotely.
Product
The free mobile app #SelfCare combines elements of self-care, video games and wellness apps. Code has proposed a new category of app to define it, a "companion," stating "Our companions are built on a framework of deepening friendship, not increasing challenge or complexity, to help you relax and grow."[9]
TRU LUV's business model is unique in that #SelfCare is free to download, there are no pop-ups, and in-app purchases are currently limited to custom interior design elements (bedspread, rug, wall art) co-created with independent artists and designers.[10]
Media attention
TRU LUV has been featured in outlets including The Guardian[11] and Kotaku[12]
In the lead up to the launch of #SelfCare, Brie Code and co-creator Eve Thomas appeared on the 2017 SXSW Gaming panel "Video Games for People Who Don't Like Video Games" alongside Sheri Graner Ray and Sagan Yee.[13]
In February 2019, TRU LUV founder Brie Code gave a talk on TRU LUV at TEDxMontreal.[14]
