Taihape College was a co-ed Secondary School (Year 9-13) in Taihape, New Zealand.
History[edit]
Taihape College began operating at the start of the 1963 school year, however was not officially opened by Prime Minister Keith Holyoake until March 1964. Its establishment came as a result of continued expansion within the Taihape township and area following the post-war period. This put pressure on the Taihape District High School and by September 1960, had a primary school roll of 584 and a secondary roll of over 200. The Wanganui Education Board proposed that the school be split with the secondary school been built at Winiata, just south of Taihape.[1]
The Taihape College school roll conitnued to increase and by 1980, there were 349 pupils at the school. By 2004 the roll had dropped to 179.[2]
Due to the decline of both The Taihape College and Taihape Primary School rolls, the College was closed during 2004 and the Taihape Area School was built to amalgamate both Schools. The Taihape Area School was officially opened in October of 2005, catering for all students from Years 1 - 13. [1]
The closure of both Taihape Primary School and Taihape College was announced on the 12th of May 2004 by the Education Minister at the time, Trevor Mallard.[3]
Post Closure[edit]
Fire Education[edit]
On the 14th of September 2015, Taihape College held its final lesson to students. Firefighters from across the Whanganui-Manawatu area traveled to the College where the unused science block of the school was set alight in a controlled burn for the purpose of firefighting education.[4]
