Talemwa Pius (born 23 August, 1993) is a Ugandan Film Director, Producer and Screenwriter. He is an Alumni of both the New York Film Academy (NYFA) and the Multichoice Talent Factory Academy, year of 2020.[1][2]

He co-wrote, co-edited and co-directed his the short film titled Engaito with his long time friend and colleague Isiko Abubaker. Engaito was released under the "Colors of Africa" theme on the Showmax streaming service on May 25th 2021. Engaito was nominated in several awards including the Kalasha International Film & TV Awards, the Uganda Film Festival Awards (UFF) and the Janzi awards.

Biography[edit]

Talemwa Pius was born in Kampala, Uganda on August 23rd 1993. He has lived in Uganda all his entire life. He has a Bachelors Degree in Industrial and Fine Arts from Makerere University Kampala.

Early life and Education[edit]

Born in Nsambya Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, Talemwa has ancestry from the Nyoro or the Banyoro peoples of Uganda. .

Education[edit]

Talemwa started going to school at Muteesa II Memorial school in 1996. He later joined Kitebi Primary School in 2000 and Bunamwaya C/U Primary School in 2004 where he would sit for his Primary Leaving Examinations in 2006. For his high school, he joined Lubiri Secondary School in 2007 for his O'Level but later changed school to Mengo Senior School in 2010 where he would sit for his Uganda Certificate of Education (U.C.E) in 2011 and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (U.A.C.E) in 2013 respectively.

He joined Makerere University Kampala (MUK) the following year in 2014 where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Industrial and Fine Arts in early 2019 with a major in photography. Although his course was three years, he never graduated until January of 2019.

Film school[edit]

After numerous failed startups to jumpstart his filmmaking career, Talemwa decided to enroll for the Multichoice Talent Factory (MTF) Class of 2020. While at the MTF Academy, he was one of the only four Ugandans[3] who were selected by the Multichoice company to represent Uganda at the East African Academy in Nairobi, Kenya to study for 12 months, an equivalent of 1 year. When the COVID-19 Pandemic hit Nairobi in March of 2020, the MTF Academy was put on a halt but later on resumed as it culminated into the MTF NYFA Short-Form storytelling Workshops by the New York Film Academy where he graduated with a certificate in March of 2021.

In the same year, he managed to graduate from the MTF Academy with a certificate in filmmaking in 2021 as well as Kenyatta University in Nairobi Kenya with a certificate in proficiency in film. At around this same time, he graduated from Henley Business School in South Africa.

Career[edit]

Talemwa worked as a production assistant in 2017 with VUQA Tv (now VUQA Network), an affiliate to DJ Bush baby's Raising the bar. He worked for two months until he decided to do freelance photography. Around 2018, he wrote, shot and directed his first ever short film called Hakeem's Nightmare which was starring Twinomugabe Hakeem as himself. A few months later, he shot and animated his first ever short stop motion films titled "Castle of Doom" and "Life of Pablo" respectively. Both films premiered on his YouTube channel. In 2020, Talemwa directed and produced another stop motion animation called "Rations" which he would later release on his Instagram page himself.

Film breakthrough[edit]

(2020-2021): Engaito

This is Talemwa's official breakthrough film. The film premiered on the 25th of May, 2021 on Showmax. It would also go on to screen at the Uganda Film Festival in the same year where it was nominated for the best student film. The film was also nominated for the Best International Film award at the 2021 Kalasha awards in Nairobi, Kenya.

2021 - Present: WORLD - B

This is going to be Talemwa's first feature directorial debut film set to release in 2024.
