Early life[edit]
Taraima was born in Kuok, a village in Kampar Regency, Dutch East Indies.[1] She had two brothers, Salim and Usman, and two sisters, Fatimah and Thonimah.[2] As of 2020, all of her siblings already passed away in their hometown.[2]
Marriage[edit]
Taraima was married to Muhammad Amin, a trader who came from the same village with her, and has had three sons, Zakaria (1913–2006), an ulama, Hasyim (d. 1995), and Ahmad bin Muhammad Amin, both became a farmer and trader.[3] Their marriage lasted until divorced.[3]
In raising her children, Taraima along with her husband implements religious practices and emphasizes strong discipline.[4] She woke up his eldest son at 04:00 AM every day and told him to lead the congregational Fajr prayer, then continued by teaching him to help prepare the merchandise together.[5] Taraima emphasizes and wants her children to have an honest nature, not bother other people, give in when bothered by other people, not hurt other people, and like to help weak people.[4] She pays attention to all her children fairly and without giving preference to any of them.[4] His son, Zakaria, stated in an interview that even though he felt that he did not have any outstanding advantages compared to his other brothers, his parents treatment of not giving preference to one of their children succeeded in making him relate to his brothers with great affection.[4]
Later life[edit]
Taraima worked as a slop seller in market along with her husband in a market that moves from one village to another along the Riau-West Sumatra road.[1] She also has a farm and a pen of buffalo which his son, Zakaria, grazes in the rice fields as an additional income.[1] In 1923, after her sister, Fatimah, brought her eldest son to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, she never saw him again.[2] Her two other son, Hasyim and Ahmad, moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and worked as a farmer and glassware dealer, and obtained Malaysian citizenship in the 1960s.[3] Taraima died at her hometown in Bangkinang, Kampar Regency.
Legacy[edit]
In an interview with Azuwar Anuwar in 1991, Zakaria bin Muhammad Amin stated that Taraima was a hardworking person along with her husband and even so, she could still be a spiritual figure who did not forget to worship god, which made an impression on Zakaria during his childhood.[1]
On 9 August 2023, during the 66th anniversary of founding of Riau, his son Zakaria was honored as a Regional Hero of Riau.[6] Taraima was honored during his thanksgiving ceremony and was mentioned in Zakaria: Pahlawan Dalam Kenangan (2023), a documentary film which was based on a footage of the event.
