Tasha Layton (born October 27, 1982)[1][2] is an American singer-songwriter and worship leader, based in Nashville, Tennessee.[3][4]
Layton had her first CCM radio hit in 2019 with her debut radio single "Love Lifting Me".[5] However, her second radio single, "Into the Sea (It's Gonna Be OK)" released in 2020, has been labelled her breakthrough song, and has seen her elevated into the Billboard Top 5 Female Christian Artists in 2020.[6][7] In 2021, her success continues to grow with her latest hit single "Look What You've Done" becoming her first top ten single on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart[5] and media labeling her one of Christian music's "fastest rising stars".[8]
Early life and education[edit]
Originally from Pauline, South Carolina[9], as a teen she had a passion for music and worship, often singing at church and leading worship in her youth group. However, she was hurt in an environment of division in the church, leaving her deeply wounded. She began college doing a music major, but disillusioned with her church environment, she eventually abandoned her faith. Slipping into depression at college, she realized she needed help and decided to change her major from music to religion, to seek out truth and find what would give her peace. In delving into numerous religions, experiencing humanistic philosophy in college, spending a summer away in Europe and being away from her church family, her depression deepened to the point of attempting suicide. At that point, out of the nowhere, a friend found her in her suicidal pain and consoled her. She interpreted her friend's timely action metaphorically, as Jesus pursuing her. It became a turning point out of religious confusion, in which she'd felt she was having to strive to try and reach God in each alternative religion. She decided that she would go to seminary after she remembered that she had committed her life to ministry when she was thirteen.[10][11] She moved to California and enrolled at The King's Seminary, California where she [12] completed a Master of Divinity degree. During that time, Layton worked as a worship leader for four years and began working as a session vocalist in the city.[13][user-generated source?]
Career[edit]
In 2010, she auditioned for season 9 of American Idol,[14][user-generated source?] reaching the top 60.[15][user-generated source?] Shortly after, she successfully auditioned for a background singer position for Katy Perry and spent the next four years touring with her.[12] During this time, she performed as a part of live productions at Disneyland in Anaheim, California[13][user-generated source?] and worked as a session vocalist on content for Cirque du Soleil. She was featured on several songs featured on the children's television station Nickelodeon.[16]
Layton moved Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a solo music career and in 2013 become a voice and theology of worship instructor at Trevecca Nazarene University.[17][not in citation given] During this time she met and married Keith Everette Smith, a Grammy Award and GMA Dove Award-winning musician and producer.[1]
In 2018, Layton signed to BEC Recordings and in the fall of that year released her debut radio single, 'Love Lifting Me'. It reached the top 25 on both the Billboard Christian Airplay and AC Monitored charts[18] and moved into the top 20 on the AC Indicator chart.[19][not in citation given]
On July 10 of 2019, she released her debut EP entitled Love Running Wild. In December 2019, she was nominated for Female Artist of the Year in New Release Today's We Love Christian Music Awards.[13][user-generated source?] In April of 2020, Layton released a single entitled 'Into The Sea' which was featured on and climbed to the number 9 spot on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart and peaked at number 4 on their Christian Digital Downloads chart.[20] Her first EP, Love Running Wild, was officially released to radio and streaming services on June 28, 2019.[13][user-generated source?] A track included on the EP entitled 'Love Lifting Me' achieved Top 25 status on the Billboard Christian Airplay and AC Monitored charts, and Top 20 on the AC Indicator chart.[21]
After signing to BEC Records on September 5, 2018,[9] she released the single 'I Belong to You' to streaming outlets. The single was featured on her debut EP entitled Love Running Wild. The song was officially released to radio and streaming services on June 28, 2019.[13][user-generated source?] A track included on the "Love Lifting Me" EP achieved Top 25 status on the Billboard Christian Airplay and AC Monitored charts, and Top 20 on the AC Indicator chart.[21]
In April 2020, Layton released a single entitled 'Into The Sea'. The song was featured on and climbed to the number 9 spot on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart and peaked at number 4 on their Christian Digital Downloads chart.[20] It was featured on FreeCCM.com's 'Music You Should Be Listening To' section upon its release,[22] and featured on '365 Days of Inspiring Media'[23] and K-Love Radio's New Artist Watch.[24]
