Tephlon Funk! is an American independent comic book series created by Stephane Metayer and published on November 17, 2015.

Background

Originally created in 2004, Stephane Metayer first came up with the concept while still in high school after doodling a young girl with cornrows. He didn't have a title for the series until 2005 after listening to Ready To Die. However, a majority of the story's influence came from Illmatic[1]. In 2014, French artist David Tako took over as illustrator along with Nico Safe.[2] In October 2015, Stephane launched a crowdfunding campaign through Kickstarter to help finish and self publish the graphic novel. The project was a success and raised over $22,000 in pledges. The 1st issue was released in December 2015 with a limited run of 100 copies. It has since been reselling on eBay for upwards of $90.[3] The series has been praised for its grounded, relatable storytelling, along with its fleshed out protagonists. As well as the manga-inspired art style and backgrounds that helps illustrate its overall tone.[4]

Instead, she runs into a mysterious classmate named Gabriel Ainsley who asks her to help him search for Tephlon Funk. A new drug that Kefflow has been selling throughout New York City. However Cameron, an undercover New York City cop is also searching for it and somehow has a long history with Gabriel.[5]

Media

Soundtracks

After having several fallouts with independent artists, Stephane decided to contact Fat Jon and asked if he'd be interested in putting together a free soundtrack for the comic series. With the goal of spreading the word about Tephlon Funk through a different medium:

Tephlon Funk: The Free Tape was released on June 27, 2016 for free on SoundCloud. The EP features 12 Lo-Fi Hip Hop tracks all produced, mixed and arranged by Fat Jon. The soundtrack was later released on vinyl with a 36 page manga comic in every copy.[7] As well as streaming platforms Spotify[8] and Apple Music[9] on July 20, 2018.

Tephlon Funk: The Dope Tape was released on December 18, 2020 The 2nd EP also features 12 Lo-Fi Hip Hop tracks[10]. They first started planning out the music in late 2018. Stephane even flew out to Germany to work with Fat Jon on the project, the EP took over a year to put together.[11]

Animation

In 2017, a short anime teaser was released, the animation was produced in Japan by D'ART Shtajio[12]. Fans have speculated that an anime adaptation is in the works, however there has been no official confirmation.
