Teresa Garratty is a British director and video-maker. She became deaf at the age of 18 and is a British Sign Language user.

Activity[edit]

After a short experience as an actress, Garratty turned film director, and has written and directed several short films. In her movies, Garratty explores the representation of deaf LGBTQ+ people on the screen.

In "Admit None", featuring Kevin Xirum and Genevieve Barr, Garratty makes use of the familiar and frustrating experience of poor subtitles at the cinema to create comedy.[1][2]

"The Quiet Ones" (2015), starring deaf actors Jamal Ajala, Rose Ayling-Ellis and William Grint, was the winner of Deaffest's Ben Steiner Bursary.[3]

Her short "Almost", starring deaf actors Vilma Jackson and Rose Ayling-Ellis, won the ‘Favourite Alternate Abilities Award’ at Film Only Film Festival 2020 and Best Performance (to Vilma Jackson) at OutlantaCon Short Film Festival (2020).[4][5][6]

Her short "What If?" (2021) won Winner of Favourite LGBT+ Film at Film Only Film (2021); Best Overall Filmmaker at Sappho Film Festival (2021); LGBTIQQ at Splice Film Fest (2021).[7][8]

She owns her own photo and video production company, TG Film & Photo, based just outside London. She is one of the role models listed on the National Deaf Children Society's webpage.[9]

In 2021 she contributed with an essay to the BBC Radio 3 series 'My Deaf World', along with other four deaf personalities. The essay was read for radio by herself and translated into BSL by the actress Charlotte Arrowsmith.[10][11]
