The Tesla Science Foundation (TSF) is a non-governmental and nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, whose main goal is to promote the legacy of Serbian-American scientist Nikola Tesla and provide support to those who follow his path.[2][3][4]

History[edit]

Nikola Lonchar, Founder and current President of Tesla Science Foundation

The official founding date of Tesla Science Foundation is considered to be July 10, 2004, that is, the 148th birthday of the great scientist. On that day, the admirers of Nikola Tesla and the innovators in the St. Nicholas Church in Philadelphia established the Nikola Tesla Inventors Club. At the time, the first lecture and the first exhibition dedicated to Nikola Tesla were held, and the first Steering Committee was formed, the main body of the Foundation. Since the Church is far from the downtown, the members of the Club moved their activities to the city library. There Americans began to visit them, who, as it turned out, were more interested in Tesla's spiritual life than his patents. The Nikola Tesla Inventors Club will later be renamed the Nikola Tesla Club, and then, on Orthodox Christmas in 2010, the day of Tesla's "abandonment of earthly life," it will grow into Tesla Science Foundation.[3][4]

People of all nationalities, regardless of race and religion, came to the manifestations organized by the Foundation, so, as time passed, its membership became more and more numerous. The main Founder and current President of Tesla Science Foundation, Nikola Lonchar, a Serb from Philadelphia, who is related to his namesake by origin, interests and innovations, wanted Tesla's achievements to be understood by as many people as possible, so that the testimony of the connections by invisible forces between all the people becomes visible. For that purpose, he constantly advocates for increasing the number of members of the Foundation and including the scientific elite and young people in its work, lectures on the topic of Tesla's inventions in American schools, but also animating the Serbian public. Therefore, in 2014, he established the representative office of the Foundation in Serbia – Tesla Science Foundation Serbia, based in Zemun.[4][5]

The Foundation is the initiator and implementer of many projects, research and initiatives, of which probably the most important are: Tesla's People, Canonization of Nikola Tesla, National Program of all Serbs in the World, Nikola Tesla clubs, etc.[4] For many years, the Foundation has been the guest of honor at the Philadelphia Science Festival, organized by the Franklin Institute.

Tesla's People[edit]

Realizing the project 200 years of Serbs in America, which began on June 28, 2004 at the suggestion of the then President of the Tesla Science Foundation Marko Lopušina, the management of the Foundation, inspired by Tesla's scientific altruism,[2] decided to unite all its activities under the name Tesla’s People. The celebration, which was held on Vidovdan in 2004, should have reminded that two centuries ago the first registered Serb on American soil Đorđe Šagić came to Philadelphia. The preparation of the ceremony was a great challenge for the members of the Foundation and lasted for months. Over seven hundred people, Serbs and their friends, attended the celebration of 200 years of Serbs in America. Among the most prominent visitors were: Milan Panić, Michael Djordjević, Helen Delich Bentley, David Vuich, representatives of the governments of the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Srpska, the diplomatic corps, the Serbian Orthodox Church and various Serbian organizations in America. Lectures, exhibitions and concerts were available to everyone for free.[4]

As part of the multimedia endeavor Tesla's People, a documentary film was made in 2018 by the Creator and First Producer Nikola Lonchar, and a new film based on Tesla's philosophy is planned. However, there have been numerous attempts to appropriate and misuse the name Tesla's People from Serbia, America, Croatia and other countries,[6] so the Foundation had to legally protect it.[4]

In addition to the TeslaTalk.TV video platform, which broadcasts webinars and other videos on Tesla, Tesla's People and Tesla Scientific Foundation, a Serbian-American team of experts is working on a platform to establish Nikola Tesla clubs.[2][7]

Research[edit]

Assuming that there are more Serbs outside Serbia than in Serbia, Tesla Scientific Foundation conducts research and surveys, which want to clearly define the causes of frequent migrations of the Serbian people, settlement from Canada to Australia and assimilation, and come to possible solutions. Foundation finds the reasons for that in the fact that some of the world's greatest minds were called Serbs, such as Ruđer Bošković, Mihajlo Pupin, Nikola Tesla, Mileva Marić, Milutin Milanković, and in the fact that Serbs have a glorious history, rich culture and respectable tradition. Yet, they lose their identity and abundance.

Based on the thesis that the motherland and the diaspora are on the same path, the Foundation equally researches public opinion in Serbia[8] and in its diaspora.[9]

Canonization of Nikola Tesla[edit]

St. Tesla by Tatiana Basova

On Orthodox Christmas 2021, the President and the Steering Committee of the Tesla Science Foundation sent a proposal supported by a petition to the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church to consider the canonization of Nikola Tesla and declaring July 10, Tesla's birthday, a religious holiday.[10] In an interview for the Chicago newspaper Serbian Mirror in May 2021, Nikola Lonchar explained this move with the words: "For me, the one who helps everyone and wants everyone to live better, and does not ask for anything, not even a memorial, is saint. Tesla gave humanity only good and did not separate anyone… He is a saint of all the people in the world, originated from Serbian ethnos".[2]

Inspired by this initiative, the Russian artist Tatiana Basova painted Saint Tesla.[2]

National Program of all Serbs in the World[edit]

Tesla Science Foundation is the initiator of the petition for the creating of the proposal of the National Program of all Serbs in the world, which would define the interests, i.e. set of priorities and offered solutions for the survival and development of the Serbian people, given that a large number of them live abroad and in the newly formed states of the former Yugoslavia. Representatives of the Foundation and the signatories of the petition see the guiding words in the slogan: "Only Unity Saves the Serbs", messages from Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović: "Please, God, that Serbs agree, get along and multiply" and Patriarch Pavle: "It will be better when we are better". To make it happen, it is necessary that all Serbian people be equal, i.e. to have the same rights and obligations, and that the political will of the authorities in Serbia focus on using the intellectual and other potentials of Serbian diaspora.[11] For that purpose, Ireland and the Irish should be a role model, according to the president of the Foundation, Nikola Lonchar.[2]

Nikola Tesla clubs[edit]

Nikola Lonchar and Ashley Redfearn Neswick

As it was noticed that Tesla was underrepresented in the syllabuses of American schools, the Tesla Science Foundation came up with the idea to change this by founding Nikola Tesla clubs and Nikola Tesla science clubs by establishing cooperation between the Foundation and the teaching staff and students.[12][13]

The mission that the Foundation carries out through Nikola Tesla clubs is reflected in the improvement of the way of thinking, the development of critical thinking and intelligence in children. This is achieved through an interactive educational program based on Tesla's life and heritage, which will be realized and upgraded through the international platform NikolaTeslaClubs.com, which will provide a better understanding of Tesla's ideas, inventions and approach to life.

The implementation of the program includes pilot schools, members of the American Paradigm Schools and a narrow team of Tesla Scientific Foundation, including:

Ashley Redfern Neswick, Executive Director and Director of Education of the Foundation. Neswick is also the Executive Director of American Paradigm Schools, which helped a lot during the experimental introduction of Nikola Tesla clubs in schools. She recognized what Tesla mean to the Serbian people and to what extent the Serbian communities celebrated him in the diaspora. The collaboration between American Paradigm Schools and the Foundation has lasted for more than seven years, during which bridges have been built between innovators around the world;[13][14] Jelena Gradimir, the Foundation's Director of Development. In order to realize the project as successfully as possible, she improved the internal communication system by classifying the team system. She is in charge of launching the NikolaTeslaClubs.com platform and club programs and internationalization by coordinating a team of experts and schools;[13] Ellis Oswalt, dramaturge. Oswalt is working on the adaptation of the Tesla: Then, Now and Forever drama and on a unique manual for schools where Nikola Tesla clubs are being introduced (with Jelena Gradimir) and on the NikolaTeslaClubs.com platform. He is the author of the book Tesla's Words, for which he received the Tesla Spirit Award and which helps people to understand Tesla's character and work;[13] and Juliana Pandurević, Foundation's Manager of the Diaspora & Youth Relations.

With the establishment of Nikola Tesla clubs in America, an exceptional success was achieved, in the form of additional education of children who are prone to science and art, and the application of the same model began in primary and secondary schools in Serbia in partnership with Tesla Science Foundation Serbia. The goal for all these clubs is to network through NikolaTeslaClubs.com completely free and to participate together with the American ones in the transfer of knowledge and the promotion of innovation as a fulcrum of social development.[15]

The most important partners of the Foundation in the Nikola Tesla clubs development are the Tacony Academy Charter School, part of the „American Paradigm Schools”, and the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.[14]

Part of this initiative is the project Tesla Ways, conceived as a software geo-guide through Tesla's biography. A monograph and a documentary on this are also being prepared.[16]

Tesla: Then, Now and Forever[edit]

The founder of Tesla Science Foundation Nikola Lonchar wrote the play Tesla: Then, Now and Forever, which was edited by the writer Gordana Pavlović, translated into English by Milan Kostić, while Ellis Oswalt dramaturgically adapted it to the needs of schools. It is planned that the script of this drama to be available for free downloads from NikolaTeslaClubs.com and to serve to educate new generations about Tesla.[13]

Tesla – Science Race[edit]

Serbian innovator and entrepreneur Aleksandar Ignjatović created an interactive game Tesla – Science Race, in which players are able to follow Tesla's path and face the challenges that led to revolutionary inventions. The game is based on the STEM principle, which is an acronym for Science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The President of the Tesla Science Foundation assessed: "Aleksandar Ignjatović did exactly what was missing in the presentation of Tesla, especially during the pandemic." The Foundation therefore awarded him the Nikola Tesla Gold Medal,[17] and in May 2021, at the Foundation's invitation, he presented a game in American schools,[2] which would become a compulsory teaching aid.[18]

Ignjatović also became a part of the Steering Committee of the Foundation, as Innovative Educational Project Coordinator.[1]

Events[edit]

Liberty Bell in Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia

Tesla Days[edit]

The multi-day manifestation Tesla's Days has been organized every July in Philadelphia since 2013 under the auspices of Tesla Science Foundation and with the help of the city authorities, in honor of Tesla's idea of a clean planet. The central activity of Tesla's Days was Million Volt March for energy independence.[19][20]

Tesla's Night[edit]

Members of the Tesla Science Foundation have been marking Tesla Night, i.e. July 9-10, for years, in front of the Liberty Bell in Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, one of the most historically significant places in the New World where the original Constitution of the United States is kept and where this country declared its independence. Encouraged by that, the mayor of Philadelphia declared July 10, the Tesla's birthday, a holiday.

The Diaspora Day[edit]

Tesla Science Foundation, in cooperation with Singidunum University from Belgrade and with the support of relevant organizations, such as the Matica of Emigrants and Serbs in the Region and the Organisation of Serbian Students Abroad, launched in 2016 the annual conference The Diaspora Day, in which participate representatives of the motherland and the diaspora, academic community, governments of the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Srpska, the diplomatic corps, etc. Integral parts of the conference are panel discussions, round tables, exhibitions, competitions, etc.[21][22]

Tesla Spirit[edit]

The Foundation is also the founder of the international memorial conference Tesla Spirit, which has been held nine times since 2012. With the support of the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in New York, this event takes place once a year on the last platform of Nikola Tesla's life, the New Yorker Hotel in Manhattan, and includes activities that celebrate it: from art exhibitions to presentations of individuals and organizations that did something significant on the occasion of greater acquaintance of the public with Tesla and his patents, and thematic panel discussions and the Tesla Spirit Award ceremony.[23][24]

The Motherland and the Diaspora on the Same Path[edit]

The conference Matica and the Diaspora on the Same Path (sometimes "… on the Same Task") is a part of the multimedia project Tesla's People and a series of annual conferences of the Tesla Science Foundation. In 2021 the main conference topic was the research of the same name, which has shown that seventy percent of Serbs in the world want to invest in Serbia, but are largely prevented from doing so by "undefined laws and excessive bureaucracy."[2][25][26]

Tesla Science Foundation youth[edit]

The youth of the Foundation is also very active and is increasingly involved in major projects, which is the management's plan for the future. Thus, on April 22, 2021, on the anniversary of the breakthrough of the Jasenovac concentration camp, an online conference Jasenovac and Our Culture of Memory was held, at which the opinions of new generations on the great crime against the Serbian people by the Ustaše could be heard.[27]

Awards and recognitions[edit]

Tesla Science Foundation awards seven types of awards and recognitions to deserving individuals and organizations. Among the winners are American and other foreign scientists and artists, and the list of laureates in 2013 included the then President of Serbia Tomislav Nikolić, who received the Tesla Spirit Award.[28]

Every year, the Foundation awards honorary Tesla medals, as a sign of gratitude for the affirmation of the Serbian genius and the Serbian people.
