The novel Memory of the flesh was written by Algerian novelist Ahlam Mosteghanemi (Arabic: أحلام مستغانمي), who won the Najuib Mahfouz Prize in 1998،. The novel was published in Beirut in 1993.[1]

Reception[edit]

Critics hailed it as the most important piece of literature in the Arab world in the last ten years, and the stamps were raised as a result of its success, making it the most controversial and well-known novel. According to figures from Arab book fairs (Beirut Exhibition - Amman - Syria - Tunisia - Sharjah), it was the best-selling novel for several years. Several university studies and theses based on the novel have been published in Jordan, Syria, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Marseille, and Bahrain.[2][3][4]

Summary[edit]

An artist named "Khalid Bin Tubal," who lost his arm during the war, falls in love with "Hayat," a beautiful girl who is the daughter of an Algerian revolutionary who was a friend of Khalid's during the liberation revolution, but whose father was killed during Algeria's great liberation war against French colonialism. Hayat falls in love with khalid without a confession of her side. The events are intertwined between them (Khalid and Hayat) with the emergence of a friend of Ziad's, a Palestinian revolutionary activist. However, in the latter, she confronts her society's customs and marries a powerful and highly influential man in the Algerian government; this marriage, together with other pressing circumstances that Khalid is experiencing, will lead to the utter collapse of his life.[1]

Artistic production[edit]

Algerian artist Amal Bouchoucha[5] got her first experience of television drama with the series “Memory of the flesh”. The series consists of 30 episodes starring the great Syrian artist Jamal Suleiman[5] and was screened on the screen of "Abu Dhabi" during the month of Ramadan 2010, directed by “Najdat Ismail Anzour[6], but the work did not meet with the expected success due to his inability to convey the poetry of the text which was the source of the novel's success, on the other hand, the work is considered one of the rarest cinematic productions that mimicked the intellectual class.[7]

Amal Bouchoucha embodies the role of "Hayat", the daughter of an Algerian activist who fought and was martyred during the great liberation war against the French occupation to gain independence. Her father's companion falls in love with her who’s in armed jihad and entrusted to preserve her family, her mother and her brother, while she falls in love with a Palestinian journalist and writer fighting for the Palestinian cause.[6]
