The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos is a total conversion of Piranha Bytes' Gothic II: Night of the Raven. The game was released on Steam and GOG.com platforms in December 2021.
The game was created by a core development team of around 30 developers, working non-profit for over 4 years. Over 60 voice actors were involved in Polish voiceover and over 50 musicians performed the soundtrack.[1]
The team gained permission from Gothic series publisher THQ Nordic and the game was released on Steam and GOG.com.[2]
Synopsis[edit]
The game is a prequel to Gothic series. The action takes place 10 years before events in Gothic on Archolos island, mentioned in the original game. It is meant to be a big island east of Myrtana, famous for the best vineyards in the kingdom. The game depicts events that lead to situation from Gothic series.[3] [4]
Development[edit]
Before The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos, developers were creating another total conversion mod — The History of Khorinis. Because of internal conflicts, in January 2018 the team split, creating two independant groups. Most of the developers started creating new The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos when the rest continued working on The History of Khorinis.[5] [6]
In May 2020, the team announced that alpha version of the game has been finished, and the game is fully playable.[7]
In December 2020, the team presented an official trailer introducing Marvin, the main protagonist of the game, together with plans for the release in 2021. The developers informed that the final phase of development has begun, starting with voiceover recording.[2]
In May 2021, the team announced that game will be also distributed on GOG.com platform.
On December 3, 2021, the team published a release trailer and announced release for December 10. They also presented full cast of Polish voiceover with famous Polish actors such as Mirosław Zbrojewicz, Cezary Żak, Artur Barciś and Olga Borys.[1]
Reception[edit]
Within five days of its release, the game was downloaded more than 100,000 times. Less than two weeks after its debut as many as 98% of its reviews on Steam were positive.[8] [9]
The mod has been announced Mod of the Year 2021 by ModDB community.[10] [11]
In peak, over 9,000 players were playing the game simultaneously on Steam.[8]
