The Horror Virgin is a weekly film review podcast, featuring hosts Todd Schlosser, Michael Randolph, and Paige Wesley. It was launched in June of 2018 by Schlosser, along with friends and former hosts Clint Fletcher and Jenn Adams, with each episode revolving around a different horror film. The podcast currently has millions of downloads and has garnered a devoted fan following through its social media presence.

Premise

Each episode of The Horror Virgin is centered around Schlosser, the titular horror virgin, as he experiences horror movies for the first time. Despite his lifelong aversion to anything scary, he is exposed to films that span the horror genre, all while accompanied by his friends. In each episode, the hosts discuss the film, share interesting facts and anecdotes about its filming, and rank them on a "Scary Scale." Each episode is filled with humor, running gags, and catchphrases, all of which contribute to its success.

History

The podcast was originally conceived by Schlosser and Fletcher, who had been friends since high school. The idea had been developed, but it wasn't until they both moved back to their home state of Tennessee that the idea came to fruition. Fletcher then reached out to another childhood friend, Jenn, knowing that as a host, she would bring an interesting perspective and genuine love for the genre. The podcast had a very positive launch, and after only two weeks, they were asked to join the Modern Horrors Podcast Network. Fletcher departed approximately four months after launch, citing time constraints, and was followed by a series of guest hosts, until Michael Randolph permanently filled the role in January of 2019. In January of 2020, the podcast became part of the Consequence Podcast Network[2]. Citing personal reasons, Jenn decided to leave the show in August of 2020. A friend of the show and cohost of the Cult Podcast, Paige Wesley, stepped in to fill the vacancy.

Spin-off

In August of 2020, shortly before Paige joined The Horror Virgin, the first episode of Romancing the Pod was released. Similar to The Horror Virgin, the podcast reviews romance and romantic comedy films. The two shows have a considerable overlap of fans, resulting in Romancing the Pod having a very impressive debut. New episodes are released every Thursday.

Reception

The Horror Virgin has generally favorable reviews. It currently has over 800 reviews on Apple Podcasts, with an average rating of 4.6/5 stars[3]. The podcast also ranks in the top 100 TV & Film podcasts and the top 20 Film Review podcasts in the US[4].
