The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild is an upcoming American computer-animated adventure comedy film, directed by John C. Donkin, and written by Jim Hecht, Ray DeLaurentis, and William Schifrin.[1] It is intended to serve as the sixth installment to the Ice Age franchise and stars Simon Pegg, reprising his role as Buck.

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild is being produced by 20th Century Studios and 20th Century Animation, and scheduled to be released as a Disney+ original film on January 28, 2022 in the United States.[2]

Premise[edit]

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild continues the hilarious escapades of everyone’s favorite prehistoric mammals. Desperate for some distance from their older sister Ellie, the thrill-seeking possum brothers Crash and Eddie set out to find a place of their own, but quickly find themselves trapped in a massive cave underground. They are rescued by the one-eyed, adventure-loving, dinosaur-hunting weasel, Buck Wild, and together they must face the unruly dinosaurs who inhabit the Lost World.

Cast[edit]

Additionally Scrat is expected to appear.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

On the possibility of a potential sixth film, in June 2016, Galen Tan Chu, co-director of Ice Age: Collision Course, stated that there were some ideas for the next installment.[4] In August 2018, CEO of 20th Century Fox Stacey Snider announced that a television series based on Ice Age and centered around the character Buck was in development at Blue Sky Studios.[5][6] On October 25, 2019, seven months after the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney, the project was confirmed to be still in development for Disney+.[6] In December 2020, the project was confirmed to have been redeveloped as a film and to be titled Ice Age: Adventures of Buck Wild, centering around Buck going on an adventure in the Dinosaur World with Crash and Eddie.

However, on February 9, 2021, it was announced that Blue Sky would shut down in April 2021, which it did on April 10. Consequently, many of Blue Sky's upcoming projects, including a film adaptation of Nimona with the release date of January 14, 2022, were cancelled.[7] Despite this, production on Ice Age: Adventures of Buck Wild continued. On January 14, 2022, in an interview with Animation Magazine, it was revealed by director John C. Donkin and executive producer Lori Forte that Blue Sky was not involved in the film.[8]

Casting[edit]

It was confirmed that Simon Pegg would be reprising his role as Buck.[9] However, Seann William Scott and Josh Peck, who voiced Crash and Eddie respectively in previous films, will not be returning, as Vincent Tong and Aaron Harris were casted in their roles.[1] Utkarsh Ambudkar and Justina Machado are also part of the cast.

Music[edit]

Batu Sener was revealed to be the composer for the film on August 2, 2021.[10][11] Sener later uploaded a snippet of the score to SoundCloud on September 26, 2021, confirming that original themes from Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which was composed by John Powell, would be in the film.[12]

Another teaser was uploaded on December 14, 2021.[13]

Animation[edit]

Unlike the previous Ice Age films, the animation was outsourced to another studio, that studio being Bardel Entertainment. Bardel had previously collaborated with 20th Century Animation on Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2021).[14][15]

Marketing[edit]

The teaser trailer was released by Walt Disney Studios' YouTube channel on November 12, 2021, which was Disney+ Day.[2] On the same day, the title was revealed. On January 4, 2022, a second trailer was released.[16][17]

Additionally, Just Play Products will play a part in merchandise.[18]

Release[edit]

The film was originally expected to be released exclusively on Disney+ on January 28, 2022. However, it was supposedly rescheduled to be released March 25, 2022, but Batu Sener confirmed the film's original release date.[19] It was later revealed that the film would be retain its January 28 date for the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Japan while being released on March 25, 2022, in Europe, Asia, and the Pacific, making it the first Disney+ original film to not have a "simulcast", in which it's released on the same day worldwide.[20]

Future[edit]

Sequel[edit]

On the Disney+ PR page, it was revealed that a seventh Ice Age film is in development.[3]

Television series[edit]

On May 4, 2021, it was rumored that a short series produced by Blue Sky Studios known as Scrat Tales would be coming to Disney+. The series would follow the titular Scrat, who discovers that he has a son.[21] Footage was later leaked onto YouTube, with former Blue Sky animators revealing that the series would be coming to Disney+ in 2022 after The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild. A plush for the character of Scrat's son was also unveiled via Just Play Products’ website, with the second image featuring a blue tag containing the logo for Scrat Tales, although the listing was retitled under The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild to promote the new film.[22]
