History[edit]

The Institute of Molecular Biosciences is a union between two previous research institutes within Mahidol University, the Institute of Science and Technology for Research and Development and the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics.

The Institute of Science and Technology for Research and Development was founded in 1981 with the goal to support University professors and researchers the field of molecular life sciences research. In 1992, a full research facility in Salaya campus was built, with a construction budget of approximately 392 million baht and 24 million baht for research equipment. The building is the first building that is equipped with laboratories, capable of conducting research in various fields.

The Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics was founded in 1997, according to the Government Gazette announcement, dated 2 October 1997 with the goal of to produce and develop research in the field of molecular biology and genetics and to serve as an academic center for molecular genetics discipline.

The Institute of Molecular Biosciences was established on 20 May 2009 when the Institute of Science and Technology for Research and Development was merged with the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics due to Mahidol University structural re-organization.

The Institute of Molecular Biosciences is the starting point for cultivating research at the forefront of universities and of the country. These include research in medicine and medical sciences, relating to common diseases found in Thailand such as thalassemia and dengue fever, in biotechnology such as biodiversity, rubber, cassava, shrimp and mosquito population control. The Institute also own research and development projects with high commercial value, particularly vaccine development, iron chelators and shrimp biotechnology. In addition, research related to food, medicine, diagnosis and vaccination  have high impact and can generate income to both the Institute and the University. They also answer to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), which are to increase food security and to increase the quality of life.
