The Iyer Project is a Carnatic Alternative Rock Band from Delhi, India. The band was formed in 2013. The current lineup comprises Ananth Venkatesh (guitars and backing vocals), Ashvin Venkatesh (guitars and backing vocals), Chandramouli Chandrasekaran (vocals and acoustic guitar), Himangshu Yadav (bass) and Sameeron Chatterjee (drums). Himangshu Yadav replaced Sahil Dhingra on the bass in 2016. The band has also seen session artists such as Anhad Khanna and Vishwam Raghunandan on the drums and Smriti Iyer as the female vocalist.
Early years and band formation[edit]
The founding members of the band - the brothers Ashvin and Ananth, and Chandramouli are all alumni of Ahlcon Public School in Mayur Vihar, Delhi. Being South Indians born and raised in Delhi, they were connected to Carnatic Music and were also heavily influenced by pop, rock and metal artists. Although they barely interacted with each other at their school, they were aware of each others' work in Music through SoundCloud and Youtube. In 2013, they formed The Iyer Project after deciding to explore a fusion of Carnatic style vocals and guitars with rock and metal.
They were subsequently joined by Sahil Dhingra on the bass who also happens to be the producer of their first few songs and Sameeron Chatterjee on the drums. In 2016, Himangshu Yadav replaced Sahil Dhingra as the bassist. The band's core lineup has remained unchanged since then except for a few sessions artists temporarily replacing the drummer.
Music Style[edit]
The Iyer Project's musical style is Alternative Carnatic Rock. They blend in elements of Carnatic Music in vocals and guitars with progressive rock, alternative rock and metal. The band members draw inspiration from a variety of artists from traditional Carnatic music and popular international acts such as Dream Theater, Lamb of God (band), Porcupine Tree,Coldplay and A.R.Rahman. The band composes in English, Hindi and Tamil. Pioneers in Carnatic guitars such as Baiju Dharmajan and R. Prasanna are key inspirations.
Albums[edit]
The Iyer Project released its debut album titled The Epiphany of Being Sane in September 2018 at Hard Rock Cafe, New Delhi. They state - “This album is our great revelation as a result of us maintaining our sanity and sticking together as a band all these years.”[1]. The album was produced by Anindo Bose of Advaita (band) fame.
The album has received a great response[1] but also has its share of criticisms with some considering the songs to be too long and a "labored listen". [2]
