The Levels School

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Levels School is a specialist independent day school for children aged 8 to 16 with dyslexia and co-occurring differences. It is situated in the village of Ashcott in Somerset, England. It has the capacity to provide education for up to 65 pupils.[1] The founder is Bradley Middleton and the current Head Teacher is Caroline Cook.

History[edit]

In March 2020, Shapwick School in Shapwick, Somerset, closed permanently following reports of financial difficulties. Shapwick School had been an independent specialist day and boarding school for children with dyslexia. In April, a group of former staff from Shapwick School began working to set up a new school locally. The new school, called The Levels School, is situated in the village of Ashcott, close to the site of Shapwick School,[2] and was founded by Bradley Middleton, who formerly worked in a pastoral capacity at Shapwick. Moving with him to The Levels School were teachers and therapists from Shapwick, including the former head of therapy.[3] The school was given the green light by Sedgemoor District Council following a virtual meeting of its development committee on 4 August 2020.[1] The BBC reported on the 26th November that The Levels School had received the green light from the Department for Education and would be opening in January 2021.[4]

Premises[edit]

It was announced in April 2020 that Bradley Middleton had secured the site of Etonhurst in the village of Ashcott for the school premises.[5] Etonhurst House is a large 19th century house on 5 acres of land, situated off the A39 Bath Road. The property was a boarding house for Millfield School from 1960 to 2002 and a private residence from 2002 to 2020.[2] On 4 August 2020, Sedgemoor District Council granted planning permission for the building to be converted from residential use into a school.[1]

In addition to classrooms, the property includes space for therapy rooms and offices, outdoor grounds and a tennis court.[5]
