The Luminous Fairies and Mothra (Japanese: 発光妖精とモスラ Hepburn: Hakkō Yōsei to Mosura) is a serialized novel written in 1961 by Shin'ichirō Nakamura. Takehiko Fukunaga, and Yoshie Hotta. In 1960, Toho producer Tomoyuki Tanaka hired Nakamura to write an original story for a new kaiju film and so he wrote The Luminous Fairies and Mothra with Takehiko Fukunaga, and Yoshie Hotta. Each man wrote one of three chapters that made up the book.[1] It was serialized in Asashi Weekly magazine during January 1961 and it marked the first appearance of Mothra and was the basis for the 1961 Toho film Mothra.[2] [3]

Plot[edit]

On an expedition to a small uncharted island in the South Pacific, a group of Rolisicans discover numerous tiny fairies called the Ailenas (アイレナ Airena) living among a native tribe. These fairies worship the goddess Mothra. [4] The Rolisicans kidnap the fairies in order to profit off of their strange and unique size, unknowingly anger the island's goddess. Mothra hatches from a giant egg and travels to Japan and morpjd into her imago form. She then flies to Rosilica, destroys the capital city of New Kirk City and rescues the fairies. They then return to the island to live out their lives in peace. [3]

Legacy[edit]

Screenwriter Shinichi Sekizawa later adapted the story into the screenplay for Mothra, patterning his version after King Kong (1933) and Godzilla (1954). The film adaptation released in July of the same year. [5] [6] Mothra went on to become Toho's second most popular kaiju character after Godzilla, appearing in eleven Godzilla films and her own trilogy in the 1990s.

The Luminous Fairies and Mothra was republished in full as a paperback in September of 1994.
