The One is a mixed-use skyscraper, located in the European district in Brussels, and developed by the Belgian developer Atenor. This project is the first concrete project of the new urban development plan aimed at transforming the area around Rue de la Loi (Plan Urbain Loi).[1]

It replaces the former Brutalist-style tower Hotel Europa (Crowne Plaza) dating from 1971 and demolished in 2015.[2]

Architecture

The building is composed of offices (The One Office), apartments (The One Residence) and shops each having their own independence. For example, access to offices is via Rue de la Loi, while housing has its entrance on rue Jacques de Lalaing and shops on Chaussée d'Etterbeek. The circulations (hallways, elevators...) and the technical systems (ventilation, heating...) inside the tower are also independent for each part. The levels are not aligned between the entities.[3]

The graphic style of the side facades is similar to the One 57, or 15 William towers located in New York

The side facades have, for the office part only, fixed shutters disposed randomly and oriented at 45° which allow daylight to pass through while filtering the direct sunlight. These elements take part in the graphic animation of the building which, depending on the point of view, will change in appearance and color.[4]
