The Sweet Treats Man! is a 2022 2D Independent Stealth Action Horror Videogame developed by Stathis Tsasakos. The player controls a child looking for candies, for the town's Annual Halloween Candy Hunt, while hiding from a candy vendor, known as The Sweet Treats Man, who is suspect for the disappearance of three other children. The game features an original artwork, which is a mix of Hand-Drawn Analog Horror and 4 color-palette pixel-art, an 8-bit soundtrack, a fresh script and gameplay - all developed entirely by Tsasakos. The game took inspiration from several sources, including Clock Tower and Atari's Halloween horror games. Originally, The Sweet Treats Man was meant to be an endless Slasher Survival Arcade without story and was set to be released in 2019. However, it remained a draft until Itch.io's 10th GBJAM, which inspired the creator to bring the project back on the trails and complete it.[1]

The game was fully released for Windows in September 2022, with a Demo release in October 2022 for the same platform, due to Halloween, and it was praised for its top-quality GameBoy graphics, story, concept and addictive gameplay.

Gameplay[edit]

[2]The Sweet Treats Man! is a Side-Scrolling Stealth Videogame. In the game, the player controls a child to collect a certain number of candies per Stage, in order to progress through the story. Players have to explore each of the stages and interact with plants in order to complete their objective. However, they have to be careful and manage their time wisely, because the Sweet Treats Man (a tall dark figure wearing a Top-Hat and staring the player with two shining eyes) will come out frequently and if the player doesn't manage to hide behind the bushes in time, then it's game over with a disturbing jumpscare of The Sweet Treats Man occurring.

The game features two endings, with the true one relying on the player to find all of the morse codes hidden in the background of each stage. Those reveal a series of instructions that have to be done in order to achieve the game's real ending. This is implied via an A1Z24 cipher featured in the game's opening.

Plot[edit]

[3] The game’s Artstyle and Setting was totally inspired by the 50s, while its story tells two separate incidents from two different decades but still connected!

Past

It is revealed throughout the game that, the Sweet Treats Man was formerly, a regular guy working with Dave on making and selling candy, until Dave got married, had a son, and left the job behind to spend more time with his family. The job did poorly without Dave and, it appears that the Sweet Treats Man was long before the game's events obsessive towards him.

It is clear that the game's cursed cartridge actually reveals the truth behind the disappearance of Dave's son, James. The stages show the Sweet Treats Man stalking the child, while it was looking for candy due to the Town's Candy Hunt Event for the Halloween Eve.

During that day (possibly, in the afternoon), James was kidnapped and died a horrible death at the hands the Sweet Treats Man in his basement. It is unknown what happened afterwards, with the murderer and his victims going missing, but it is quite possible that the Sweet Treats Man performed some kind of magic or ritual to transfer the victims' and his soul to the cursed cartridge.

Present

After many years of not being able to explain his son's disappearance, Dave finds the long lost and haunted cursed cartridge, only to encounter the ghost of his ex co-worker and, soon, finds out that the only way to put an end to the nightmare is by beating the game and breaking the murderous curse.

The fate of both the Sweet Treats Man and the imprisoned souls, depends, on the player's acts afterwards:

vIf the player beats the game, normally and without finding the imprisoned souls, they will probably get the Bad Ending, where the Sweet Treats Man reveals his insanity and says "goodbye" to Dave before the cartridge, possibly, disappears again.

If the player beats the game by finding all of A1Z24 and Morse ciphers to save the imprisoned souls, they will get the Good Ending, where the Sweet Treats Man dies (likely killed by the vengeful spirits of his victims) as the curse breaks.

Development[edit]

[4] Stathis Tsasakos had the idea of creating a stealth horror videogame, since 2018, with the first concepts being about a maze inhabited by a creepy silhouette known as "The RedMan" which would appear eventually to the room the player was in, if they stayed inactive for quite some time. The game was supposed to feature Atari Graphics but the whole concept never actually went into development. In 2019, a new poster, depicting a top-hat slimy creature called EID, with a design pretty similar to the prototype's villain, was released on Gamejolt showing that the project was finally on the rails, but it was canceled the same year.

The concept has been abandoned until 2022, when Tsasakos inspired by Itch.io GBJAM's GameBoy theme, began officially the production of the game. The Sweet Treats Man! was developed in 72 hours by Stathis Tsasakos, due to the Jam's Deadline. The creator confirmed that on the last day of the development, he decided to change almost completely the script, because the original felt like a "cheesy slasher game".

Artwork

Before beginning with the Development of the game, Stathis Tsasakos made a research about old photos from the 50s. That's why, the game constantly has references from that decade, with most notable being the characters' fashion, the candies you can find, and most of the locations are inspired by real ones. It has been confirmed that Stage 1's environment was inspired by the old Regents Park.

Reception[edit]

[5] [6] [7] The Sweet Treats Man! was quickly considered a minor cult classic due to its small community. It was praised to be one of the most unique short Indie Games of Itch.io in 2022 and compared to other GameBoy games like Bart Simpson's Escape from Camp Deadly, while a few found its gameplay repetitive. In 16th of December 2022, it came first place in IGC 2022 Competition.[8]
