The Violet Stones are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney, Australia in 2016. It was founded by lead singer and guitarist Sarah Jane alongside lead guitarist Jarrod Mazzacca (originally on bass) and drummer Mate Teariki. Later on they found Neil Johnson who had taken over the bass. They were formed shortly after Sarah Jane's success on her solo career, upon the releases of varied musical covers of mainstream rock songs. They released their debut album Exordium on September 13, 2019. The release show for Exordium was also Mate's last live appearance with the band, although he will be heard on their 2nd upcoming album with their single shark releasing July 31st, 2020. Most of Jane's guitar and vocal covers relied on grunge or nu metal bands, such as Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Silverchair or Korn and System of a Down.[1]

History[edit]

As formed in late 2016, The Violet Stones came out as a result of a previous band Sarah had with Jarrod and Mate at their high school, as addressed by Jane on multiple Q&A's on her YouTube channel. As on July 2016, the band had uploaded their first video to YouTube, that consisted on a cover of the song "Heart-Shaped Box" by Nirvana. However, it only featured three band members of the band having Neil Johnson missing and Jarrod Mazzacca was on the bass guitar. Previously named "Amethyst" Jane recalls that she had been in several bands even before the beginning of her solo career, on her teen years.[2] She stated that she had started playing the guitar at age 13 and on July 29, 2015 she had uploaded her very first YouTube video, that featured a guitar and vocal cover of the song "All Apologies" by Nirvana which is considered by the band as a huge influence to their career. They released their debut single "Intensify" in March 2019.[3]

Early releases (2016 – 2018)[edit]

The Violet Stones released their first single, "Opinion" on November 25, 2016 on the platform Bandcamp, on which would later become one of the band's highlighting tracks. After a couple changes to the song's structure, "Opinion" later gained exposure through the band's debut album, Exordium. It is considered one of the oldest songs by the band to date. Followed by "Opinion" the band released one more single on January 20, 2017 named "Awkward". A solo version of the song can also be found on Jane's YouTube Channel, before the release of the fully recorded song. At the end of 2017, the band also released a compilation of original songs and covers played on a radio station, called "Live Radio Gig". It featured new Violet Stones songs as well as "Breed", a Nirvana cover.[4]
