The Walking Zombie 2 is a 2019 first-person shooter RPG video game developed and published by Alda Games.[1][2] It is the second entry in The Walking Zombie series, following 2018's The Walking Zombie: Dead City.[3][4] It was released in 2019 for Android, IOS & Microsoft Windows (on Steam), in December 2021 for Xbox One & Xbox Series X/S.[5][6][7] Set in a post-apocalyptic world infested with zombies; the player assumes the role of a person having natural immunity against the virus that caused the zombie outbreak.[8] The game is having polygonal graphics and runs on a freemium model.[9] It is made in Unity Game Engine.[10][11]

Gameplay[edit]

The game is played from a first person perspective with shooting elements. The core gameplay consists of elements of first-person shooter, role-playing and open world. Also provides the player with the ability to buy and use land vehicles to transport from one location to another (even though the route is pre-set and only accessible when we are having quest(s) to complete). The player's character is also able to buy and operate a wide variety of weapons. On foot the player's character is capable of walking, running as well as using weapons.[12][13][14]

The player has to complete quests given by the NPCs to either progress in the game's story or to get valuable rewards. There is also a location in the game called 'Open World' where players can roam freely, kill zombies and collect loot lying here & there.[15][16] The player can also buy and use food, medicines, armour, ammunition etc.[17] The game takes around 40-50 hours to complete (story).[18]

Story[edit]

Summary[edit]

Our character (TCO) is born during the zombie apocalypse and is having immunity against the zombie virus. 20 years later he goes on many quests to different cities and locations to find a cure for the virus. On his journey, TCO encounters many enemies, boss fights and new friends. At last, he finds the cure.

Detailed storyline[edit]

Woodlands[edit]

There has been a zombie apocalypse and spread all over the world. Our character is born to an infected woman in the forest (in the 'Woodlands' location). As soon as our character is born moments later our mother turns into a zombie and attacks the survivors who helped her. A young man manages to gun her down and save the newborn.[19][20]

The scene shifts to 20 years later. It is revealed our character's name is 'The Chosen One' and today's his 20th birthday. He goes to Elder (the young man who saved us 20 years ago) and the latter tells the former to go to Frank (one of the survivors living alongside us in the Woodlands camp) to take a gun and some ammo from him and go to the shooting range for training.[21] Afterwards, he does some quests given by NPCs and on a quest, The Chosen One and Frank go to an abandoned house to get some supplies but are attacked by many zombies and Frank flees from there leaving The Chosen One to die. He wakes up a few days later to find he is alive and his wounds are healed. He makes his way to the camp and goes to the camp's nurse Leila. She is also surprised to see he is perfectly fine even though he was attacked b a horde of zombies.

At night, Elder tells our character that some scientists at the nearby (now abandoned) Science Base led by a crazy scientist Smith captured and did horrible and inhumane experiments on TCO's mother, which gave TCO immunity from the zombie virus. The former also tells the latter only he can find a cure and protect humanity.

After this talk, TCO is tasked by Elder to go to the Science Base for important documents. When the former does the same, Elder reads the documents and finds out that the virus can mutate and become deadlier So TCO is then tasked to collect important supplies from the Science Base.

Shortly after this Elder tells TCO (Short for 'The Chosen One') that Frank betrayed us all and stole all the supplies the survivors of the camp had stored for winter and now he is fleeing Woodlands. TCO is tasked with retrieving the supplies ASAP. He goes after Frank and finds his car broken down on the way. The former confronts the latter. Frank tries to bribe TCO but he declines so Frank pulls out his shotgun and starts shooting at him. This is the first boss fight in the game. After a short fight, TCO easily defeats and injures Frank. Some zombies start coming towards them; the latter begs the former to not leave him in between the zombies but the former ignores him and successfully retrieves the supplies back to the camp.[22]

After Frank's encounter TCO is tasked by Elder to go to the Science Base and trigger the self destruct sequence of the Science Base to destroy it; when TCO goes for the same, he encounters a huge mutant zombie 'Experiment 626'. It's a boss fight. After defeating him, TCO triggers the destruction sequence and barely makes it out on time.

After this event, Elder marks a new location on TCO's map called 'Springfield' a nearby city; Elder tasks TCO to go to many cities' science bases for important documents and a possible cure starting with Springfield's.

Springfield[edit]

When TCO arrives in Springfield city he soon finds out no one will tell him Springfield's Science Base's location except for if he does something in return for them. He helps Springfield's citizens in many ways, and soon finds out the city's safety is in danger due to the eccentric and corrupt mayor. He soon finds the doctor of Springfield, Andrew who tasks him with finding his daughter Ruby, who has been missing for a few days. He then meets Chuck, a ranger who is worried about Ruby's disappearance too but assumes she is dead but still tells TCO to search outside the city at many locations and soon TCO finds Ruby injured in a building near the (now abandoned) Radio Station.

Ruby tells TCO that she knows the locations of the many Science Bases (SBs) but wouldn't tell him till he solves the problems of Springfield's citizens. During one such quest, TCO has to escort a bus carrying supplies, after protecting it for some time (He is protecting it through a sniper rifle at a distance). A huge mutant humanoid comes running through the buildings and crushes the bus like cake. His name is 'Pretty Boy'. Even though it's a boss fight it's the easiest in the game (because we are provided with a rocket launcher to defeat Pretty Boy).[22]

After helping the citizens a lot, Ruby reveals the 2nd SB's location but instead of scientists, it is inhabited by tramps who are regularly sent supplies from Ruby.

Reviews[edit]

"This free-to-play FPS/RPG game can be played offline and online and can be found on Steam since 2019 and since this week also appeared on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. But strangely enough , it costs just under 10 euros . It is a shame that there are in game purchases available and the moment you have that, I think you should make a game available for free. Especially if it is free on another platform. I must say that it does look very nice and the reviews on Steam are very positive. I wasn't aware of this one and will definitely give it a try." [2]

"Well, it’s set in episodes in different locations, and after completing a number of tasks you can move to the next town. What this translates into is a series of missions, first in the little town we grew up in, then onto larger settlements, with Mayors who look a lot like a certain American ex-President, and then even more missions until we have unlocked all the locations on the world map. The missions, which are a large part of the grind in trying to get stronger, are very much cookie cutter by design. As an example, in the first town, there’s a location called Secret Science Base. Every mission in this area, no matter what the lead up to it is, involves travelling to the same location, killing some zombies, then either picking something up or hitting a switch. And each time we go back, the zombies have magically respawned. There is a fun game trying to get out of The Walking Zombie 2, but it is drowning under the constant push of microtransactions. The end result just feels like a mess." [9]

"It is known by many that zombie video games have managed to maintain their appeal for many years in a row, although it can also be said that after a small loss of popularity during the last decade they have managed to rise from the dead with more force than ever, with a multitude of proposals on all the platforms that exist. However, not all of them have the same quality and they are not essential either, and The Walking Zombie 2, despite the fact that it is a more than correct proposal that bets on frenetic action in the first person, does not manage to find its place within this zombified society either." [11]

"As I said before, despite having that detail with real money purchases, at least many things can be obtained simply by playing the game. The Walking Zombies 2 is a pretty fun title, I didn't expect much from it and I found it quite fun; not only does he have a charisma to be immersed in his world, he also has a multitude of things to do and obtain, which extends the replay value. Personally, I would love a totally open world The Walking Zombies 3 either free to play, or paid game, but not a strange mix. In the meantime, you may as well give this instalment a chance because you will have a good time casually." [13]

"A simple control scheme, Minecraft-like graphics, and aspects of both role-playing and first person shooter games Walking Zombie 2 is a fun and enjoyable game that appeals to a wider audience. The Walking Zombie 2 is a must-try for all FPS lovers who want a good pocket zombie shooting game. It is very much story-driven and has incredibly well-sorted controls."[23]
