[2]
The novel "The Return of the absent" is considered one of the most awaited Arab novels by readers because it contains answers to some questions that were left open in the novel "The Shadow Government", which met with good success and great interest by readers and the Arab media.[3]
It is the second novel by the Saudi novelist Munther Al-Qabbani, who is considered by many to be one of the most known novelists in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region.[4]
Summary[edit]
The events of the novel begin in 1909 when a man in the Jeita forest discovers a cave harboring a strange meeting of a stranger group. Then the events take us to 2006 and a romantic trip on a ship in the Mediterranean with Daniel Gold. The story is known of the character of the young Saudi man named Jamal Jadawi, who was taken to his beloved Dalal Rahal during their honeymoon in the city of London.
Criticism[edit]
The novel was well-received by critics, Lebanese critic Abboud Attiya wrote in Al-Qafila magazine, " the writer skillfully managed to gradually fill the reader's mind with the chapters of this huge plot, through a small, realistic-looking set of events, " there is an accurate description of the known places." It can even be said that all the places are known and real...The writer reinforces this (realistic) character of events, By bringing it to some well-known real events". He praised the writer's ability to link the events of the novel with "the shadow government", " weaving relationships between the heroes of an integrated novel based on a previous novel is not a necessary prelude to it, it one of the most difficult formulas of novel plots. In this area, we can say that Al-Qabbani successfully faced the challenge. He is really distinguished from his literary "godfather" Dan Brown, whom we see only the hero moving between more than one novel."[5]
