Thoeun Theara (Khmer: ធឿន ធារ៉ា), is a Cambodian Kun Khmer fighter. Theara has won numerous international competitions and claimed several titles, such as the IPCC title and the Kard Chuek King's Cup Championship with his victory over Saiyok Pumpanmuang.
Background
Thoeun Theara was born in 1998 in Sdav Village, Prey Kandieng Commune, Peam Ro District, Prey Veng province. Theara was the only son in a family of four children and he did not have the chance to study. He left his hometown in Prey Veng province to live in Thailand with his parents as a child and he grew up watching his parents work hard as woodcutters for a business in Saraburi Province.
At the age of 10, Theara decided to work in a bakery shop where he earned 300 baht per day. He worked full-time from 7 a.m. to midnight and also worked overtime until 11 p.m. to earn 5,000 baht per month (approximately $150).[1] When Theara was 15 years old (in 2013), he visited his hometown in Prey Veng with his parents and decided to stay in Cambodia to work for a nearby brick manufacturing business. In 2016, Theara and his parents returned to Thailand to work as metal cabinet blacksmiths, where they earned around 15,000 baht per month by working on customer orders.[2] Unfortunately, this new job only lasted a year before they became unemployed again. This situation forced them to move back to Cambodia in 2017, where Theara worked as a construction worker in Phnom Penh, earning only 40,000 Khmer riel per day.
Career
During his two-year stay in Thailand, Theara established a reputation and gained a following of Cambodian fans who eagerly awaited his return to Cambodia. He finally returned in mid-2020 to resume his career in Kun Khmer boxing. However, his return did not meet expectations as he had to take a long-term break from the sport after four fights due to injury. But at the end of 2022, he surprised everyone as he became the first Kun Khmer fighter to win the Thai Fight title with a first-round TKO stoppage[3] when he expertly used his elbow to cause a significant gash on the right eye of Thai boxer Saiyok Pumpanmuang. The bleeding was so severe that the doctor had to force Saiyok to stop the fight.
