Thus the Sadness of the Heron

Thus the Sadness of the Heron is one of the most famous and important contemporary Arab novels, written by Ibrahim Aslan and considered one of the most important works of modern Egyptian literature. Ibrahim Aslan worked on this novel for almost eight and a half years, from December 1972 to April 1981.[1]

Brief[edit]
The novel is set in Cairo's Imbaba neighborhood, specifically in the Kit-Kat region, and revolves around an alienated scholar whose invalidity changes and each character suffers from their own concern and alienation.the characters of the novel are more than 115 characters. Despite the novel's relatively short length, the main characters can be divided into:
- Youssef Al-Najar… An intellectual young man who is diverted from university society and became lonely and sad in imbaba
- Fatima.. Poor little girl loves Yousef Al-Najar unrequited love and tries to seduce him
- Sheikh Hosney.. Dirty sheikh lives in the area and suffers from alienation and loneliness that he tries to adapt to in funny ways
- Teacher Sobhy.. The rich merchant tries to buy the region's main coffee, which resembles as a milestone in the lives of the characters, to demolish it and build his own building.
- Teacher Ateya.. Cafe Owner
- Abdullah a café owner.. The café boy sees his world (the café) sold in front of his eyes and he can't do anything.
- The English man Al-Asta qadry.. A man who had worked all his life with the English and then after the evacuation, he became an expatriate from his world as he felt he belonged to the high English society despite his poverty and his inhabitants one of the poorest neighborhoods of Egypt
- Farooq and Shawqi.. Two unemployed men trying desperately to find a job and trying to keep up with the bitter reality
- Uncle Amran.. An old cook who was a private cook of King Farouq.. His world ended with the expiration of ownership and became lonely. Only Uncle Mujahid, the bean seller who died at the beginning of the novel, was keeping his company.
- Prince Awadallah.. Son of café builder Hajj Awadallah.. He sees the coffee shop his father built sold to be demolished in front of his eyes and followed up and he can't do anything.
- The pyramid.. Drug salesman in the region
- The jeweller, Suleiman .. Son of a jeweller and rich, evaded by his playful wife
Film adaptation of the novel[edit]
In 1991, Daoud Abdel Sayed adapted the novel into a film called Kit-Kat, in which some characters were merged, and the roles of others were changed, and some were hidden, but the novel maintained the film's basic plot.
