About the Story[edit]

The novel revolves around a female who was born with a female body, but behaves like a man, as a result of her father's hatred of girls. Talaat (the main character) was the fifth daughter of her father, who had threatened her mother if she did not give birth to a son. As soon as she gave birth, he gave her a masculine name to be an imprint in her life. She is also so moved by him that she admits that she is happy to be a man and gets more freedom. But as the days go by, she discovers that she wants to be a female like her sisters and mother, and she wants her father to love her for who she is. She also falls in love with her colleague "Imad" at work, who offers her to marry, but she refuses him at first, until she visits her childhood friend, who thought that she would find her in a miserable condition because she got married and sat at home. But she was shocked by her happy and good life with her husband. The male stereotype image she was forced to believe in collapses, and she hurries to Imad to tell him about her love for him and how she will not deny her nature anymore.[2]

Writer's View[edit]

Women played a major role in Ghada al-Samman's stories and novels, as she was one of the first women's rights advocates. She was keen to raise the issue of women's oppression and confinement to marriage and kitchen in Arab society in most of her work. In the novel, “Your eyes are my destiny,” Ghada reveals to us about the actions of a father who destroys his daughter’s innate nature to satisfy his logic and reason. It also clarified that the female fell into the trap of male thought, which the woman has been the victim of for several years.[3]
