Tobias Beckett is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise, introduced in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story and portrayed by Woody Harrelson. He is a professional thief and eventual mentor to a young Han Solo. Prior to encountering Solo on Mimban, he assembled a crew to assist in completing any heists he signed up for while working for the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate.

Beckett is introduced as the leader of a group of freelance thieves, who are in the process of attempting to steal a ship from the Imperial Army. After proving his worth to Beckett, Han is brought along with the crew as they take on their next heist. [1][2] Harrelson called Beckett "a bit of a hard ass, and he’s kind of tough on Han" [3] and said "I think in some ways, he’s complicated in the sense that he’s not always as chummy as he could be but I’d say he’s a survivor who really also does have this image of wanting to be done with this life of criminality and ultimately, just be playing the valachord, living on a remote planet somewhere." [3] Solo director Ron Howard described Beckett as a freelance criminal, and one who had a big impact on Han's life—“Well, he really shapes Han really more than anybody, as Han comes to realize that in a lawless time he needs to try to come to terms with some kind of moral code.” [4]

According to Solo co-writer Lawrence Kasdan "I love writing Beckett because he represents the whole worldview that the movie is supposed to embody. He has been around, and he has allusions and what he is keeping either directly or by example Han, is to have this view of the world. It’s not nearly as simple as you think it is; that not anyone is trust worthy; you have to go through life with your guard up." [5]

In January 2017, Harrelson was confirmed to have been cast in Solo: A Star Wars Story, in the role of the then unknown character of Beckett. Christian Bale was also rumored to have been in the running for the character.[6] Harrelson said of the role, "I am totally psyched to be making a Star Wars film. But the secrecy is on another level. What I can say he’s a good character, he is a mentor to Han and a criminal, but good at heart."[7]

Solo: A Star Wars Story[edit]

In the 2018 Star Wars Anthology film Solo: A Star Wars Story, Beckett is first introduced to Han on the planet Mimban, posing as an Imperial Officer.
