Queen Topaz is a character from Malibu Comics' Ultraverse, mainly know as part of the superhero team called Ultraforce. She is a warrior queen from an alien world, where women and men live separately.

Rachel House appeared as Topaz in the superhero film Thor: Ragnarok, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Publication history[edit]

Topaz appeared first in the comic Giant-Size Mantra #1, written by Mike W. Barr. The character was brought into the Ultraverse in Mantra #13 (August 1994),[1] and from this time, the character was depicted in the Ultraforce team books (both volumes and specials), and the events Black September and Phoenix Resurrection. Topaz also appeared in the pages of the book Angels of Destruction, in a flashback.

Fictional character biography[edit]

Topaz was a warrior queen from the extradimensional matriarchal realm of Gwendor, located in the Godwheel. In her world, the women and men live in different cities. Topaz is one of the three queens from Gwendor, assuming the military functions. Her real name is unknown, and she is only referred to as the "Topaz Queen", or simply Topaz. She meets the sorceress called Mantra and has a fight with her for the possession of the Sword of Fangs, an ancient Gwendor sword.[2] A crashed alien spacecraft (connected to the Entity on the Moon) created a series of random pan-dimensional gateways, briefly connecting Gwendor to the Ultraverse, and leaving Queen Topaz stranded in a strange world.[3]. In this new world Topaz saw that men thought themselves equal to or even superior to women. Topaz was outraged by this blasphemous notion. She was picked by Contrary and Pixx from Ultraforce.[4]

Later Pixx calmed her by showing her an image of the "true power behind men": Hillary Clinton. Pixx explained that Earth men had fragile egos, and that it was easier for women to let men think they were in charge. Despite the fact that the women lived in a patriarchal system and thus the struggle for equality is not finished. Pixx is shown to be a self-alienate. Topaz, still disturbed by this world's unnatural order, reflecting that the fact that humans were initially in more matriarchal societies, nonetheless consented to join the Ultraforce, even though it was led by a man, (Hardcase).[5]

Topaz is a female supremacist; she believes that males are inherently inferior and becomes quite easily angered when men talk down to women or act chauvinistic. She gets along well with Pixx, but though she initially respected Contrary, she now looks down on her for often using seduction as a way to deal with men. The males on the team are beneath her notice, although she grudgingly starts to respect Hardcase as a warrior.

After the Black Knight arrived to the Ultraverse, Topaz begin to discuss with him about his mandates.[6] When Sersi arrived to the encounter of the Black Knight, apparently mad, Topaz begin a battle with the Eternal, until Sersi was calmed.[7]

Topaz and her team were plucked out of the Ultraverse by the Grandmaster and forced to battle the Avengers. Topaz went up against Black Widow, but was defeated.[8]

After Black September, Topaz remained in the Ultraverse and get used to it. There were hints of mutual attraction between her and Black Knight, that went nowhere.[9] Topaz was in the front in the battles against the Tulkans and Demonseed.[10]

Powers and abilities[edit]

Topaz has strength, stamina and durability that are all significantly greater than those of normal Earth humans. She carries a power staff which is able to project tremendously powerful energy blasts. When using her staff, her skin takes on a smooth, pale purple crystalline appearance as well. Topaz is also an extremely skilled warrior, highly agile and athletic, and experienced in fighting superhuman opponents.

In other media[edit]

Television[edit]

  • Topaz also appeared in the Ultraforce animated cartoon. Being a Saturday morning show, her confrontational personality was toned down, as she came very early in the show to respect Hardcase as a competent leader, merely teasing him about being just a man, and accepting Contrary as the only person able to bring her back home. She was voiced by Catherine Disher.

Film[edit]

  • Rachel House appeared as Topaz in the superhero film Thor: Ragnarok, making Topaz the first character from the Malibu line of comics to appear in a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. In the film, the character is the Grandmaster's assistant.[11][12] She has an intense rivalry with Valkyrie, whom she calls "Scrapper 142," and is always trying to belittle or insult her much to the Grandmaster's annoyance. When Thor, Bruce Banner, Valkyrie and Loki stage an escape, Topaz gives chase in her ship. She crashes when Banner accidentally sets off fireworks in his ship, blinding her. Her fate is unrevealed, however the short film Team Darryl indicates that she is dead, with the Grandmaster having a small shrine to her in the apartment he now shares with Darryl—who he plans to make Topaz's replacement.[13][14][15][16]

Toys[edit]

  • Topaz was one of the action figures produced for Galoob's Ultraforce line.
  • The movie character, as other ones from Thor: Ragnarok, is adapted into a toy figurine.[17]
