Treasure (Korean: 트레저), stylized as TREASURE, is a South Korean boy group by YG Entertainment. The band was formed through the reality survival program YG Treasure Box and is composed of 12 members. Treasure is set to debut on August 7, 2020, with lead single "Boy" under the single album The First Step: Chapter One.

History[edit]

Pre-debut: YG Treasure Box[edit]

Jun-kyu, Ye-dam and Jung-hwan had stints in entertainment during their childhood days. Jun-kyu started as a child commercial model for prominent Korean brands.[1] Ye-dam recorded songs for commercials, animated shows and soundtracks with his parents.[2] Jung-hwan appeared as a child actor and once a member of one of the world's leading taekwondo demonstration team, K-Tigers.[3] Ye-dam appeared on SBS' K-pop Star 2 in 2012 finishing runner-up behind Akdong Musician, both signing with YG Entertainment.[4] In 2017, Mashiho appeared in Akdong Musician’s musical short film “Spring of Winter”.[5] Later that year, Hyun-suk and Jun-kyu competed on JTBC reality survival program Mix Nine, finishing in 5th and 35th spots respectively.[6] Simultaneously, Ji-hoon, Ye-dam and Do-young appeared alongside others in Mnet’s Stray Kids as representatives of the label.[7] In October 2018, Ye-dam and Hyun-suk had a cameo as YG trainees in Netflix's YG Future Strategy Office.[8]

On November 17, 2018, YG Entertainment unveiled 29 trainees, through YG Treasure Box, shown through JTBC2, YouTube and Naver V Live.[9] Haruto, Ye-dam, Jung-hwan and Jun-kyu were first to join the final lineup on January 18, 2019.[10] The remaining three members, Jeong-woo, Jae-hyuk and Hyun-suk, were separately revealed through Naver V Live on January 21, 23 and 25 respectively.[11] An announcement for a second group was revealed with Yoon-bin, Mashiho, Do-young, Yoshi, Ji-hoon and finally, Asahi on February 4, 2019 under the name “Magnum”.[12] The two groups were collectively called “Treasure 13”. Yang Hyun-suk confirmed they will debut as “Treasure 13” before promoting into their separate groups. He also announced the group’s fan club name as “Treasure Maker”.[13]

2020: Debut with The First Step: Chapter One[edit]

On January 6, 2020, YG Entertainment announced that the group will debut as a 12-member team after member Ha Yoon-bin departed and terminated his contract with the label on December 31, 2019 to pursue a different musical direction. Both groups were then merged and now collectively known as Treasure.[14] Through those social media accounts, individual and group photos entitled “Treasure Editorial” were released as well as weekly YouTube videos, most notably Treasure Map.[15] On January 30, a performance video of “Going Crazy”, the non-promotional single from the show YG Treasure Box, was released.[16]

On May 27, the group entered Billboard Social 50 for the first time where they ranked number 40, making them the fastest K-pop group ever to enter the chart before debut.[17]

Ahead of debut, on June 5, Ye-dam released a solo pre-debut single entitled “Wayo” which was introduced together with the other members through a V Live broadcast.[18]

Treasure is set to make their official debut on August 7 with the lead single "Boy" under the single album The First Step: Chapter One.[19][20]
