Trevor Cassidy was a fictional footballer who appeared in the comic strips in the British boys' comic Roy of the Rovers during the 1970s, 80s. He was a defender, playing for Melchester Rovers. He first appeared in the strip in February 1976 and died in 1986.

Career[edit]

Trevor made his debut for the Rovers on 21st February 1976 against Second Division Hansfield in the first leg of the League Cup Semi-final. Trevor was anxious to gain a permanent place in the team due to the early retirement of Jumbo Trudgeon. Unfortunately for Trevor he lost out to Gerry Holloway who secured the vacant position.

Trevor made his full league debut for the Rovers on 23rd April 1977 against Sandford. He was in the team for the injured Noel Baxter. Trevor never gained a permanent first team spot and often occupied the substitutes bench. He could play in either defence or midfield and was a product of the Melchester youth system.

Death[edit]

Tragically Noel was killed on 19 July 1986 when eight of the Rovers were innocent victims of a bungled act of terrorism in war-torn Basran.[1][2] Five more players died, between them was Jimmy Slade.

Style of play[edit]

He played as full back and also as midfielder. Trevor Cassidy was a utility player, made to be a substitute. Rarely impressive, but rarely poor.

Legacy[edit]

Cassidy made the number 12 shirt his own over a ten year Rovers career.
