U. P. Jayaraj (Malayalam: യു.പി. ജയരാജ്; 1950-1999) was a Malayalam short story writer best known for his stories with strong political undertones.

Birth[edit]

He was born in Eranjoli village near Thalassery town in Kannur district of Kerala state in India. He was born the youngest of the three sons of U.P. Gopalan and C.M. Yesodha. After completing preliminary education in Kathiroor Govt Higher Secondary School and getting an I.T.I. diploma in Electrical Engineering he started his career as an Electrician in Ordnance Factory Ambarnath.[1]

Literary Career[edit]

U. P. Jayaraj published his first short story 'Parichayam' in 1968. After his debut, Jayaraj quickly matured into a writer with strong political viewpoints. He strongly sympathized with the Janakeeya Samskarika Vedi (People’s Cultural Forum) which flourished during the seventies of the 20th century in Malayalam[2]. Most of his noted short stories were written during this period. Some of his noted works are Manju, Theyyangal, Nirashabharithanaya Suhruthinu Oru Kathu, Oru Souhrida Sandarshanam, Athe Kathyude Punarakhyanam, Oru Paurante Samshayangal, Okinawayile Pathivrathakal, etc.

വെയിൽ ചിന്നുന്നുണ്ട് .ഓർമ്മകൾ ഉണരുന്നുണ്ട്. കാക്കകൾ കരയുന്നുണ്ട് .കാറ്റ് വീശുന്നുണ്ട്. മരങ്ങൾ ഉലയുന്നുണ്ട്. കാടിളകുന്നുണ്ട്. ചൂഷണം പെരുകുന്നുണ്ട്.

അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ സമരം തുടരുന്നുമുണ്ട്".[1]

Translations[edit]

U P Jayaraj has translated a few stories from Chinese, Vietnamese and Palestine languages into Malayalam which is published under the name Unarunnavar.[7]

Letters[edit]

In addition to his short stories, he is also known for the long, endearing letters which he wrote to his friends and comrades spanning over various topics from politics, literature and cinema. Apart from the various noted letters published in various periodicals, a collection of his letters to a friend has been published by Haritham books under the title 'U P Jayaraj Govardhanayacha Katthukal'.

Death[edit]

He died on July 11, 1999, aged 49 at Thiruchirappali where he was working as an electrical chargeman with the Ordnance Factory Thiruchirappali.

Memoirs[edit]

U. P. Jayaraj has not received any awards during his lifetime. However posthumously, U P Jayaraj Trust located at Thalassery has arranged an award in his memory which has been awarded to several noted Malayalam writers like P K Nanu, V R Sudheesh, Sara Joseph, N Prabhakaran, etc.
