Sayyid Mohammed Shareeful Madani Dargah, also known as Ullal Dargah or Sayyid Madani Darga, is a dargah located in Ullal, near Mangaluru, in Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, India. The shrine commemorates the Sufi saint Sayyid Muhammad Sharif Al Madani and is an important pilgrimage site in the coastal Karnataka region.[1] The dargah is associated with the Ullal Uroos, including the 22nd quinquennial and 432nd annual Uroos held in 2025.[2]
Location and significance
The dargah is situated in Ullal, a coastal town south of Mangaluru. Karnataka Tourism lists the shrine among the notable places to visit in Ullal and describes it as a major pilgrimage site associated with coastal Islamic architecture.[1] The shrine is also connected with the wider religious and cultural landscape of Ullal, which includes historic sites related to Abbakka Chowta, temples, the beach area and the Netravati River region.[1]
The dargah has been noted in regional coverage for its syncretic tradition in coastal Karnataka.[3]
Ullal Uroos
The Ullal Uroos is a major religious gathering associated with the dargah. In 2025, the latest and 22nd quinquennial and 432nd annual Uroos was scheduled from 24 April to 18 May under the guidance of Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar.[2][4]
According to the dargah committee president Haneef Haji, the 2025 Uroos included religious discourses, educational programmes and conferences. The organisers expected devotees from different parts of India and abroad, and a day-and-night annadanam was planned for 18 May 2025.[2]
As part of the 2025 Uroos, then-Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the Sayyid Madani Grand Masjid at the dargah premises on 16 May. The proposed mosque was estimated to cost ₹25 crore and was planned to accommodate about 10,000 worshippers at a time, according to the dargah committee.[2]
Community activities
In 2020, The Times of India reported that the Ullal Dargah committee helped address drinking water shortages in nearby localities after residents approached the shrine administration. A well was dug on the dargah premises and a pumping station was installed to supply drinking water to households in Bandikotya and Millath Nagar in Ullal.[5] The report stated that the project was supported by the dargah management, donors and local public representatives, with funds also provided for pipes and a pumping station.[5]
