Under the Boardwalk is an upcoming American computer-animated musical comedy film produced by Paramount Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film will be directed by David Soren and written by Lorene Scafaria.

Premise[edit]

This musical comedy follows the hermit crabs who live under the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore. When Armen (a land crab townie) falls in love with Ramona (a sea crab tourist) tensions between their friends and families rise. But when a storm casts the duo far from home, their love will lead them on an epic adventure which unites the divided community.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

On June 12, 2019, Paramount Animation announced a new slate of animated features, including a musical film titled Jersey Crabs.[2] By July 2020, the film was retitled as Under the Boardwalk.[3] In August 2020, New Republic Pictures signed a deal with Paramount Pictures to co-finance Paramount's films; Under the Boardwalk was revealed to be one of them.[4]

Animation[edit]

The film's animation will be handled by British visual effects studio DNEG, with it's animation division DNEG Animation co-producing the film.[5] Production took place remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic for two years.

Music[edit]

On May 23, 2022, Soren announced that the scoring of Under the Boardwalk was underway.[6]

Release[edit]

The film was originally expected to be released on July 22, 2022,[7] but in January 2022, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank took its release date, thus delaying the film indefinitely.[8]
