Understanding (Mirah album)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Understanding is Mirah's sixth full-length studio album, released on her imprint Absolute Magnitude Records on September 7, 2018.

Production

Mirah wrote and recorded the album between March 2015 and December 2017, recording most of the early versions while on residency at the Headland Center for the Arts in Sausalito, CA. Upon returning to Brooklyn, she teamed up with frequent co-producer Eli Crews (Tune-Yards, The Julie Ruin) and Greg Saunier (of Deerhoof) to finish the tracks.

The lead single, Hot Hot, was released in June of 2018 and premiered with Stereogum. Mirah shared, "I was at Headlands singing and messing around on this big old ’70s electric organ, piecing together stories, thinking about getting older, about having doubts, about knowing that I am powerful but not always being able to really feel that I am, about how beautiful older people are, especially older women, who as I say, keep getting more hot with every brave thought. I want to be like that, to stay by my own side, and for other people to feel that way too."[1]

The album was a conscientious return to her early unconventional recording process – an embrace of spirited imperfection and rawness inclusive of rough first takes, natural room sounds, and a fair amount of broken equipment.[2]

Reception

All Music calls the album "a commanding and confident collection of songs that blends the confessional with the celebratory. Much more shimmering and robust than earlier lo-fi albums...Understanding doesn't shy away from layered vocals, synthesizer flourishes, and big crescendos."[3]

NPR included Understanding on its list of 'Eight Albums You Should Hear Now' on its release day.[4]

The song "Counting" was featured in an episode of Hulu's Veronica Mars.[5]
