Union Middle School is a middle school in San Jose, California, for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Union is a large middle school, with the most recent statistics[1] stating that there are 1014 students. Union is in the distinguished Union School District, which has received numerous awards. There were 49 teachers and 1014 students as of November 2017, giving a crude, unadjusted ratio of 20.69 students per teacher. The principal is Todd Feinberg, the Assistant Principal is Audrey Mantell, and the Superintendent of Union School District is Denise Clay[2]. Union has received the status of California Distinguished School.

Athletics and extracurricular activities[edit]

Union has a large athletics program[3], which has seasonal soccer, basketball, track and field, cross-country, volleyball, and wrestling teams. Union's mascot is the tiger, and Union's students are sometimes referred to as "Tigers." The 8th grade basketball teams are known for their highly competitive "Spirit Game" against their rival, Dartmouth Middle School. It is often joked that Union calls Dartmouth "dirtmouth," and Dartmouth replies by calling Union "onion." In the most recent spirit game, in 2018, Union Middle School won both of the games, which were divided by gender. Union also has a highly competitive cheerleading team. The school has a large music department, led by Chris Kay, with beginning, intermediate, symphonic, and jazz bands, along with a percussion club and choir[4].

Recent expansion[edit]

Union has recently experienced a rapid expansion in the number of students, and has responded to this by installing large numbers of prefabricated "portable" classrooms[5]. This strategy has been criticized, partially because the portables were placed on the blacktop basketball courts, lessening the amount of open space at the school. Union went through a large outdoor renovation in 2017 and 2018, replacing the track, and adding turf to the inner field. This renovation also includes adding solar panels at the back of the school, and replacing a portion of the field with blacktop (asphalt concrete).

Feeder schools[edit]

Students at Union usually come from Carlton Elementary, Noddin Elementary, and Alta Vista Elementary, but some students come from nearby private and charter schools, and some students transfer to Union mid-year. Students graduating from Union usually attend Leigh High School, but it is common for students to attend private schools such as Bellarmine College Preparatory and Archbishop Mitty High School.

Alumni[edit]

Drew Gordon, along with his brother Aaron Gordon, and his sister Elizabeth "Elise" Gordon, all attended Union Middle School. They were active in sports there, and their jerseys are proudly displayed in the school gym[6].
