Ustad Md. Yunus Khan (15 August 1934 – 03 March 2001[1]) was a Indian vocalist and touring artist known for his contribution to the Hindustani classical music.
Widely regarded as one of the Indian Classical Maestro classical singers of the Indian subcontinent, he was active in music industry, particularly in classical music. He visited several countries, including Bangladesh where he participated in music concerts worldwide.
Early Life[edit]
Born in Malda, West Bengal, British India, he belonged to a family of musicians and was influenced by khyal, a Sufi devotional music genre associated with Hindustani classical music. He was one of the senior most disciples of Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, son of the Legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of the Kasur Patiyala Gharana.
He married Sahera Khan, with whom he had five children, including three daughters and two sons. He trained one of his son Sahadat Rana Khan with classical music, leading the Kasur Patiala Gharana to retain its position in traditional music.
Career[edit]
He was the founder of Sabrang Sangeet Vidyalaya and closely associated with the cultural societies of Malda. He scored music for many occasions as well as devotional music. He has composed and directed music to a number of popular gramophone records sung by various artistes.
Amongst his students are Ustad Sahadat Rana Khan, Dr. Rupa Sinha, Smt. Paromita Ghosh Dastidar, Shri Goutam Das, Smt. Sanghamitra Chakraborty and others. His birth centenary named "Sangeet Acharya Md. Yunus Khan Music Festival" is celebrated every year on 15 August, in Malda, West Bengal by his grandson Sadakat Aman Khan.
Death[edit]
He died from Cardiac arrest in Malda, West Bengal on 3 July 2001 and is buried in Malda main muslim cemetery.
