V. Velankutty Master
Variumparamba Velankutty Master (17 April 1918 - 11 June 1991) was the Bharatiya Jana Sangh/Bharatiya Janata Party leader in Palakkad district in the 1970s and 1980s.
Early life[edit]
He was born in Variumparamba near Kallekkad in Palakkad District. He has attended BEM High School Palakkad. After finishing his schooling, he underwent a Teacher Training course. Then he worked as a teacher in Pallipuram School, attached to Pallipuram Gramam. Later he established the Union UP School at Kallekkad. Later still he moved to the Union UP School as headmaster. He retired from the service in 1973.
Public life[edit]
He started his public life as a Deseeya Karshaka Samajam leader alongside V. Vasudevan and Ambattu Sekhara Menon. In that period he contacted O. Rajagopal, the Jan Sangh Leader of Kerala. As he belonged to the prominent agricultural community of Ezhavas, Rajagopal accepted his help in building a mass base for the Jan Sangh in Palakkad.
He was the Bhartiya Jan Sangh District President for the period 1973 to 1975. During the Emergency he was jailed with O. Rajagopal in Viyyur Central Jail and afterwards joined the Janata Party, being District Secretary of Palakkad during 1978, 1979 and 1980. After the formation of Bhartiya Janata Party he left the Janata party and became a member of it. He was the State Vice President for one term in the BJP. Also he held a position as Bharatiya Karshaka Morcha State President.
He continued in active politics till 1986, after that he retired due to ill health. He died on 11 June 1991 at the age of 73.
