Valerie Broussard (/væləri bruˈsɑrd/) is an American singer, songwriter, and vocal engineer, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Valerie is signed with Round Hill Music Publishing and is certified as a Platinum.[1] selling artist. Valerie has has many placements in Television and films including Charmed[2], Batwoman[3], League of Legends[4] Pretty Little Liars[5] and others.

Valerie has an established presence on various streaming music sites.[6] In January 2021, Valerie's cover of the song "'Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood""[7] debuted as the theme song for the BBC1 drama "Traces"[8] as it charted on Shazam UK[9]. She has a popular YouTube channel and is active on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, she also has a personal website here. In early 2021 Valerie made a 32 minute Zoom Video interview with American Songwriter that covered her background, style, music, opera and other topics. Her interview is available at the site here and on YouTube.

Early life and education[edit]

Valerie Broussard was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States in 1991, where she lived with her parents and attended school in Philadelphia until she was 18. She moved to London England to attend college at University College London as an undergrad, attending King’s College London for graduate school.

Valerie became interested in opera as she had been singing since she was ten years old. While studying at the university she became involved with an underground scene, with personal style expression, operatic singing and music being a core focus, she began to write original songs during this time. Broussard became heavily involved in opera and was subsequently convinced by an opera conductor to start writing music of her own, which she started doing in 2012. After college she moved to New York where she signed with Round Hill Music Publishing. Broussard relocated to Los Angeles in January 2017 after meeting her longtime manager, she has had the bulk of her career success while living there.

In this interview with Bustle Valerie discussed her college years and explained how she had immersed herself in opera, noting that being inspired by community and ancient, moody UK surroundings she began songwriting. Her songs were soon used in TV shows; Marvel's Inhumans and Lucifer, an example of her strong, emphatic and evocative vocals are heard in The King Of Pain which was used in HBO's The Wizard Of Lies [10] (2017) television show. In 2019 she signed with Palm Tree Records | RCA Records, and by February she had recorded "Think About You". Her collaboration with Kygo had over 35 million streams on Spotify and over 14 million views on YouTube for the music video.

Performances[edit]

Broussard performed a "A Little Wicked" for Netflix's Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, season 1, in 2019. She performed live on Good Morning America [1] May 29, 2020 with Kygo and OneRepublic in the cooking segment with celeb-chef Michael Symon. She recorded a duet with Lindsey Stirling in 2019 of "Deeper".[11] In addition to collaborations with Kgyo and ILLENIUM, Broussard has singly recorded numerous songs and has been featured in other works. Valerie's evocative voicing style with it's immediate presence on Misunderstood is comforting and slightly moody without being over-reliant on computerized tuning effects. Her methods utilize echoes, delays, and flanger type effects.

Valerie's song Awaken written by Riot Music Team and Alex Seaver of Mako, for League of Legends 2019, is used in the games cinematic video. The YouTube League of Legends channel uploaded the video to YouTube, where as of August, 2021, it has over 96 million views. In November, 2019 Broussard performed Awaken as the opening act for Riot Games, ninth World Championship for League of Legends, an esports tournament. She performed live in Accor Arena, in Paris France to an audience of over 20,000. For the stage performance Valerie is dressed in the style of Camille[12] a character from the game. Moving about an expansive stage, Valerie moves her arms to 'command' dancers whose movements seem to mime to match the lyrics of the song. At the finale Broussard appears to be frozen in place by a beam of light as she sings "while the devil is knocking". Broussard made a behind the scenes video to show the arena its production, the stages and other production details. At the end of the BTS video she is shown arriving the morning of the show and an abbreviated version of her performance plays. Riot's League of Legends World 2020 was a virtualized event, making Broussard's performance the last Riot Games event of the 2020 pandemic era to be attended by a live audience, and performed in concert.

Misunderstood originally by Nina Simone in 1964 has been covered by many other artists including, Lana Del Rey, Elvis Costello, Joe Cocker, Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), The Animals. This song and other recordings by Valerie are located on Soundcloud to stream she currently has 3.8 million listeners on Spotify. .

Broussard posted a Tweet on October 3, 2020 stating; "While I was bummed not to be able to be in China for worlds this year I did get to sneak in a little appearance on Chinese tv last night to perform Awaken from afar!" in this Tweet with a new video for "Awaken" which was streamed live to mainland China. The significance of the event during the Covid-19 pandemic while the performer was under California's restrictive quarantine is immense. Valerie's soaring powerful vocals, combined with her professionalism, poise and apparent ease of delivery against a fantastical background that at it's ending, reveals images of athletes with their hands placed on a large trophy cup, is moving and memorable as it seems to deny the realities of the world surrounding her. Valerie's fan's have created many copies of Awaken either as remixes, with gameplay, Nightcore, anime, and other music genres.

On August 11, 2021, Valerie released "Wildflowers" on YouTube, in a review by Celeb Mix, Celeb Mix states that Wildflowers is the lead single for her upcoming project'; "the “Golden Hour” singer has captivated the attention of countless music fans around the world before the release of a full-length project".[13] Broussard creates music that is effortlessly relatable and consistent in quality, the new single covers the feeling of being at the crossroads of a relationship. Quoting Broussard about the song, "Like so many songs I’ve worked on the past year, ‘Wildflowers’ was written over Zoom and recorded in my apartment, so it feels right that it’s a song about how beauty can be found in wild places and untraditional circumstances” [14]
