Vandana Sharma 'Diya[1][2] (born June 8, 1981), also known as "Diya," is a scholar[3], writer, author, and philosopher specializing in Advaita Vedanta philosophy. She is recognized as the first research scholar to conduct systematic research on Advaita Vedanta philosophy and its connection to the environment.[4]

Early life and education[edit]

Vandana Sharma 'Diya' was born on June 8, 1981. She completed her B.Sc. in Hotel Management, Tourism, and Culture from Annamalai University. Following that, she pursued her B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy, Religion, and Culture, specializing in South Saiva Siddhanta, from the same university. Driven by her passion for Advaita Vedanta, she obtained a Diploma in Advanced Advaita Vedanta and Bhagwadgita Shankarabhashya[5] from the Chinmaya International Foundation in Ernakulam, Kerala. She furthered her academic journey by earning a Ph.D. in Advaita Vedanta from the Department of Philosophy, Annamalai University, under the guidance of Professor and Head, Dr. J. Thirumal. Her Ph.D. research was supported by the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, Ministry of Human Resource Development.[6][7]

Sharma has made contributions to the field of Advaita Vedanta philosophy. Her research focuses on the intricate relationship between Advaita Vedanta philosophy and environmental consciousness. Throughout her career, she has had the privilege of learning from prominent philosophers and spiritual leaders, including Prof. S.R. Bhatt and revered saints and sages such as H.H. Swami Nishchalananda Saraswati Ji Maharaja, H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, H.H. Swami Chidananda Saraswati Ji Maharaj, Swami Gyananananda Saraswati Ji Maharaj, and Swami Advayananda Ji Maharaj. However, she considers Adi Shankaracharya as her Guru and follows the philosophy of non-dualism as propounded by him. Sharma utilizes the platform of Hindutva to promote vegetarianism, environmental awareness, Gauseva (cow welfare), and animal compassion.

Sharma has translated and provided commentary on "Adi Sankaracarya’s Prasnottara Ratna Malika,"[8] published by Original Books in January 2020, with a foreword by former Chairman of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research and HOD Department of Philosophy at the University of Delhi, Prof. S.R. Bhatt. The book received appreciation from notable personalities such as Sri Sri Ravi Shankara, BJP National Vice President Shyam Jaju, and former BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav.[9] Its launch was held at the Indian Council of Cultural Relations and organized by Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, Vinay Sahastrabuddhe. For her work on the book, Sharma received 'The Swami Pranavananda Philosophy Book Award 2020' at the Asian-African Philosophical Congress 2020.[10][11]
