Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) was founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College by the Chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan. In 2001, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, conferred the Deemed University status, recognizing its excellence in academics, research, extracurricular activities, and the best practices implemented. In three decades, the Institution has emerged as an innovator in higher education, growing from 180 students to 35,000 students.

Today, it is counted among the most prominent and respected universities in India, featuring top-ranked academic programmes.

The main campus of VIT is at Vellore. It started another campus in Chennai, subsequently VIT AP at Amaravati and VIT Bhopal, which started as state private universities later.

VIT offers 54 Undergraduate, 34 Postgraduate, 7 Integrated, and 2 Research Programmes. It also offers Doctoral Programmes in Engineering, Management, Sciences, and Humanities, and Integrated Ph.D. Programmes in engineering disciplines.
