Versasec AB[6] is a Swedish multinational corporation specializing in the design, development, and delivery of smart card management systems. The company is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.
The company was previously known as Versatile Security since its foundation in 2007. It was rebranded Versasec in 2015.[7]
Joakim Thorén is the founder of Versasec and was appointed CEO in September 2012.[8]
History
Versasec was founded in 2007 by Joakim Thorén, Jörg Dettmann, Paul Foley, and Per-Anders Fjärdsäter. The company focused on addressing the complexity of managing digital identities, particularly in smart card authentication.[9]
In 2009, Versasec launched its flagship product, vSEC:CMS, a credential management solution designed for small and mid-sized enterprises. In 2010, Versasec announced a technology partnership with Gemalto, who would later be part of the Thales Group acquisition in 2018.[10][11]
In 2016, Versasec vSEC:CMS became the first smart card management system to manage the Yubico YubiKey.[12][13]
In 2019, the company expanded its offerings to include support for FIDO2, emphasizing passwordless authentication and zero-trust security principles. Subsequently, in its Market Compass for Enterprise Key and Certificate Management (EKCM), the analyst firm KuppingerCole positioned Versasec as a "Rising Star." The report highlighted the company's vSEC:CMS product for its comprehensive lifecycle management of diverse digital identity credentials, noting its capabilities in supporting both emerging standards like FIDO2 and passkeys, as well as established technologies. [14]
Operations
Versasec develops and provides identity and access management solutions. Its core product, vSEC:CMS, is a system for managing the lifecycle of digital credentials across various security infrustructures. The company's solutions are widely used for integrating PKI-based, FIDO2 passwordless authentication security, and enterprise Credential Management, supporting a range of credential types and hardware security modules (HSMs).[15]
The company's products serve various customers from small businesses to large enterprises, including financial institutions, healthcare providers, and government. Versasec collaborates with technology partners such as Microsoft, integrating with its Microsoft Entra ID and DigiCert for certificate authority services. [16]
Versasec maintains a global presence with offices in locations including Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Its solutions are designed to meet international security standards and assist organizations in addressing regulatory compliance related to data protection and authentication integrity.[15][17]
The organization pledged Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Secure by design and became a member of the PKI Consortium in December 2024.[18][19]
Reception
Versasec's products have been evaluated by industry analysts, with KuppingerCole highlighting its platform's strengths in credential lifecycle management for human identities, particularly for PKI and FIDO. The analysis praised its single administrative interface, "leading-edge" FIDO2 key management support, and integration with multiple identity providers. The report also identified areas for potential development, including refinements to the user interface, enhanced automation features for large enterprises, and expanded support for secrets discovery and reporting. According to the firm, Versasec's solutions are well-suited for organizations in regulated sectors like government, finance, and healthcare that require strong credential management.[14]
Products
Versasec has two main products:
- vSEC:CMS[20][21] – credential or smart card management systems for managing PKI tokens, smart cards and digital certificates, generally with the intention to use the credentials as identification tokens and badges in organizations to enable multi-factor authentication and non-repudiation. vSEC:CMS is available as on-premises software, or as the SaaS vSEC:CLOUD.
- vSEC:CLOUD[22][23] - a managed service of the credential management software, vSEC:CMS. The credential management system is deployed in a virtual private cloud and is managed by Versasec, as a subscription based Software as a service.
Versasec has also developed a free application to help organizations adopt the highest authentication assurance level,[24] the vSEC:TOOL.
