Vijay Kumar is an Indian doctor of physical therapy, treasurer at Rose City Lupton Chamber of Commerce and a Republican candidate for state representative Michigan, United States.[1]

He was first appointed to Michigan Board of Physical Therapy for the term (2006 to 2008) by 47th governor of Michigan Jennifer Granholm. He succeeds Helene M. Rosen.[2] Vijay Kumar re-appointed as Michigan Board of Physical Therapy for the term (2008 to 2012).[3] He again re-appointed as Michigan Board of Physical Therapy for the term (2013 to 2016) by 48th governor of Michigan Rick Snyder.[4] He was also appreciated by Rick Snyder for his hard work.[5] He was the first Indian American to chair the Michigan Board of Physical Therapy.

Vijay Kumar serves on Education Committee with the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy, United States.

He actively volunteers for The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy,[6] American Red Cross and The Lions Club. He works with the Free Clinic of The Ogemaw County and mentors of local high school students.[7]

Education & career[edit]

He holds master's degree in physical therapy from Patna Medical College and Hospital, India, Ph.D. in social science from Bihar University India, and a medical degree (MD) from Xavier University School of Medicine, Aruba. He earned a doctor of physical therapy degree (DPT) from Boston University, Massachusetts, United States.[5][8] He has also done Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University.[9]

Vijay founded Community Rehabilitation Services, a chain of advanced physical therapy clinics located throughout Northern Michigan. The organization has 5 branches located in St. Helen, Rose City, Hale, West Branch and Prescott.[10] He is the coordinator of clinical education at his clinics for Baker College of Flint, Allen Park, and Oakland University's Doctor of Physical Therapy program.[5]

Controversy[edit]

Vijay was accused of healthcare fraud and sexual assault in 2016. But Ogemaw County Circuit Court found him innocent for the lack of evidences gainst him.[11][12]

Awards & recognition[edit]

  • Outstanding Service Award 2013 for his significant contribution to The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy through his volunteer work[13]
  • Honored as Businessman of the Year 2004 by former President of the United States George W. Bush[8]
  • He is also one of the 2014 Michigan fitness ambassadors[14]
