Chartered Physiotherapists or Chartered Physical Therapists are the Highly qualified professional practitioners of physiotherapy.

All Chartered Physiotherapists have completed a university Degree or Masters programme, with hospital-based training and some years of experience in addition as well. They have comprehensive knowledge of how the body works, along with specialist training in the diagnosis and treatment of muscle and joint pain. The term ‘ chartered’ is the society's guarantee that they have been trained to the highest academic and professional standards – and also that they continue to keep abreast of emerging trends and developments through a programme of Continuous Professional Development. Chartered Physiotherapists always strive and try to indulge in different Opportunities that will enhance their State of Mind.

There are Associations/Societies who are responsible to assure and keep eye on the standards of these chartered Physiotherapists.

Currently there are Three Associations/ Societies working for the Chartered physiotherapists Worldwide-

  • The UK's CSP (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy)
  • Ireland's ISCP (Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists), &
  • India's IACP (Indian Association of Chartered Physiotherapists)

These are three Associations awarding and securing the status of Chartered Physiotherapists.

The CSP (UK) was founded in 1894 and has about 53,000 members as Chartered Physiotherapists. The ISCP(Ireland) was founded in 1988 and has about 3,000 Chartered Physiotherapists as members. The IACP (India) was founded in 1997 and currently has about 4,500 Chartered Physiotherapists as Life Members.

These three Association's lay down the criterias and rules for the physiotherapists/ physical therapists to qualify and be their member.

Who is a Chartered Physiotherapist[edit]

According to The UK's Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP)[1][edit]

"A chartered physiotherapist is a qualified member of their professional body, for UK the professional body is the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).Only qualified CSP members may describe themselves as Chartered Physiotherapists. Business, practices and services should not use the word chartered in business names or publicity. By seeing a chartered physiotherapist the patient can be confident of their professional knowledge and skills."

According to The Indian Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (IACP)[2][edit]

"A Chartered Physiotherapist is a qualified professional who has achieved the highest academic and professional excellence and adheres to offer the highest standards of Practice. These physiotherapists are self committed professionals who are devoted towards the Development of their professional and ethical values."

Hence; choosing a Chartered Physiotherapist will be a peace of mind knowing that he/she is a Member of Indian Association of Chartered Physiotherapist and is a Committed Therapist.

According to The Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP)[3][edit]

"A chartered physiotherapist is a qualified member of their professional body, the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapy (ISCP). A Chartered Physiotherapist is a university graduate with hospital-based training who has comprehensive knowledge of how the body works, along with specialist training. When you choose a physiotherapist who is a member of the Irish Society of Chartered physiotherapists (ISCP), you’ll enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that they are a part of Ireland’s only professional body within its field."
